anybody hunt with a 33 Winchester 1886?
« on: July 30, 2004, 11:05:49 AM »
I've got an old (1903) take down 1886.  It's a 33 calibre.  I assume I would have to hand load for it or find someone to do the loading for me.  Do any of you guys shoot with a 33?  The gunsmith I took the rifle to says the bore is not to bad so I thought it might be fun to see how the rifle would shoot.  I know nothing about the calibre and its potential.  Thanks.

200 grain flat nose soft point factory ammo is available from the Old Western Scrounger for $45.25 per box of 20 (ouch!).  For what it's worth, here it is:

All of my reloading books are packed away, ready to move to a new house, or I could tell you a little more.

koivu   I shoot an 86 in 33WCF.  I load for it with the 200 gr Hornady over 44 gr of 4895.  The brass can be simply formed from 45-70 brass. It's sort of like a super 30-30.  Throws a heavier bullet about the same velocity.  Hell of a deer killer but I can't see well enough to shoot much past 100 yards.  Theres nothing like the feel and sound of racking the lever of an original "86 Winchester.
