Max amount for casting at one time
« on: February 02, 2003, 11:00:47 AM »
Just got finished casting 21 lbs of 200 gr .45LC and 185 gr .38 Sp; was using both molds so they won't get too hot.
Like to do very different size bullets so won't mess up when sizing them (like trying to push a .40 through the .38 sizing die   )
Stopped after an hour and 10 minutes as I was getting tired and when I'm tired I have a tendeny to mess up and I don't want to mess up with a 20 lb pot full of liquid 700 degree lead.
My procedure was to cast 5 molds worth of one caliber, add a lb of lead and then repeat with the other mold.  This would keep the molds pretty much at the right temp, not too hot, not too cold, just right--think there's a fairy tale in here somewhere
When I stopped I found that along with the 21 lbs of bullets I had 9 1/2 lbs of spurs from the tops of the molds.  This was about perfect to re-melt as I was filling the pot up for the next casting session (I like to have the pot full when I'm done--the solid mass seems to heat up faster the next time and it is already fluxed as I do that when I finish the currect casting session)
If I had kept on going I would have had the loose spurs to keep track of till next time.
Now all I have to do is size and lube them :(  :(  :(

I keep playing with my digital camera.  Have another one in mind that uses the Ranger Tab (mine, by the way--earned it in 1969) and the crest of the 8th Cav--it is a white mustang with the words Honor and Courage underneath.  The Cheyenne part of my alias comes from Cheyenne-6, my callsign when I was a platoon leader in B Co, 2/8 Cav (ABN), 1st Cav Div., another lifetime ago in RVN.
