Look what some idiot did!!

I picked up the 48 I had been looking at. Some idiot had carved his initials into the reciever with a dremel tool.
Initials from old 48 gone. It can be done!! My restoration project is progressing smoothly.

That's certainly a nice looking piece.  How'd you blue the receiver??

I bought a really nice 870 wingmaster at action once real cheap because some idiot had engraved his SS number on the side of the receiver. Sanded it down and polished it out, re-blued and it looked good as new. Cost me about $20 to do.   KN

gunnut69, I used Oxpho Blue. I did a few more passes with it since this photo was taken. The wood stain is drying now on the stocks and I should have it together by the end of the week.

That idiot's name, BTW, is Donald E. Jones, and if he finds out you called him an idiot on a public forum he'll probably sue you good!!

I beleive that was just an opinion and as such is not a tortable statement.  Our representative call each other worse and imply the unbelieveable nearly every day of a campaign..

Sorry to say, but the sad fact is that ANYBODY can bring lawsuit over almost ANYTHING.

The good part is that to sucessfully sue over character defamation you need to prove damage to one's reputation.  Not easy.

Back from the range now. Gun shot well. 1st impression is this: Recoil is strong for a semi-auto. Much more than my sons Rem. 58. One problem I had. the very last shell would not completely leave the mag tube. I think the spring gets pretty weak when pushing the last shell. Wore out I guess. Should replacing the mag spring solve the problem? Is it common to have to replace the mag spring on older semis? Pic is with  Jr. holding it.

Got to remember the 58 was an early gas operated weapon while the 48, 11-48, etc. were recoil operated.  Actually variants of the older M11 a Browning design.  Be certain the friction piece and the cam on the inside of the barrel ring are working..  Failure to slow the bolt will cause excessive wear and possibly even damage..  On the magazine spring I's not had one come thru with a set in it but someone may have done something stupid and shortened it.  I have seen damaged springs.  Were there any marks on the rounds that failed to clear the magazine? When inserting the first round into the magazine how much spring tension did you feel?  How many rounds were in the magazine?  I would check the shells clearance thru the magazine throat and the clearance of the shell stop in it's retracted state.  Also high bolt velocities can cause misfeeds.  One last thing.  If the shell stops are just barely catching the round coming from the magazine one sometimes sees the shell releasing too early and popping from the gun onto the ground or jamming against the lifter and causing a stoppage.

Good job on bringing back the old warrior!!

Spring came out. found a stick from a branch in the tube as a plug . cleaned out tube, stretched out spring, it was clean and firm. Maybe it will work now.

I wouldn't worry about any legal problems.  There's probably multiple Donald E.  Jones in the world so simple referring to the name without a "real" person to be describing isn't a problem.  Idiot is also an opinionated term which can't be held as libel.  (you can only be sued for saying something provably false.   If you say John Doe is an idiot there's nothing he can do.  If you say he's a child molester then expect legal trouble. )

Anyways, on-topic, enjoy your 48.  If it's based on the same design as the Remington 11-48, you might have some problems though.  They're notorious for breaking the stock at the grip (mine did this), and on mine the links behind the bolt often will jump out of place causing the gun to hang.  Doesn't take too long to put them back in, but it's annoying (this is also said to be a common problem).  I would post pictures of mine which I just got through refinishing (stocks only) but it's currently at the gunsmith having the ejector silver-soldered back on.

From what my info says the 48 was only made in 12, 16 and 20 guages.  The 11-48 is the same gun with the addition of 28 and 410 guages.  11-48's and 48's were a bit finicky.  An aquaintance of mine who dearly loved the 11-48 once told me that if your 11-48 worked well, it would work forever but if you had a problem, you would always be having a problem!!  I haven't seen too many over the years but then there weren't as many made as the 1100 or the 870.  The M11 had a few querks too, just as does the A5..  good luck from the gunnut69

Picked up a 1148 in 16 Ga. to restore now. Identical to the Mohawk 48.
Light surface rust on barrel & reciever, wood scratched, nicked, but not cracked or chipped. I will steel wool off rust, reblue, refinish wood, then shoot. Will report back when done.  Paid 105.00 for the Mohawk 48 in 12 Ga., paid 99.00 for the 1148 in 16 Ga.

Just to keep the Lawyers at bay, next time write something like:

"Some people MIGHT think Donald Jones is an idiot for carving his name in a gun like that."
