410, enough for turkey?
« on: November 03, 2003, 02:52:21 AM »
Hi all, I was wondering if a 410, would be effective enough for turkey, because I am going to take my cousin hunting with me, and this will be his first yr...I have plenty of shotguns, but they are all 12's(and a old 20g), and he isnt a "big" twelve. I almost said no but I found  the 410, and I was wondering if it would be plenty within 20yds? Thanks in advance :D

I'd have to say the .410 on turkey is a no-go---BIG TIME. The 20ga would be minimum with the proper loads ---of course.

My vote would be no. The problem is that with an appropriate size shot (#4 or# 5) there is not going to be enough shot for an decent pattern.  a turkey head is a smalland nearly constantly moving target that in most cases requires the impact of at least 5 or more pellets for an effective shot. The 410s I've shot have had pretty loose patterns with the larger shot and would unlikely place the required number of pellets it such a target. An expert shooter may be able to do it but it's not a good choice for a novice.
Just another worthless opinion!!

#1 hunter,
Is the 20 gauge available for your friend?  I'd say with a decent choke (full or extra full) you have a good chance with that.  Forget the 410, unless you can take him squirrel shooting.

the kid shot a turkey with a .410 3" with #6 shot 3/4 oz load.  it was about a 25 yd head shot.  fell dead.  If you are hunting over decoys like I do you get close shots.  A 410 has just as much penetration as a 12 ga.  just not as much shot.  I use premium Fiocchi copper plated loads.

ive squirrel and coon hunted with 12 gauges and 16 and a 20. but the worst ive ever saw a squirrel or coon tore up is when i took my .410 with winchester 3" #6 shot i wasnt able to eat the last squirrel i shot with that gun. but it was choked by my uncle who does that stuff alot so its choked down as tight as its safe to choke it.
