« on: August 02, 2004, 02:30:06 PM »
I have an expent casing stuck on the bolt head and cant get that sucker off.  This came about with a reload.  Any ideas?  Once I get it fixed, are short base dies needed? HELP!!

If the whole casing is still there, you will have to tip it out the ejection port using whatever force is necessary.
If just the cartridge head is left on the bolt face you will need to disassemble the bolt . You might then be able to dislodge the cartridge with a punch through the firing pin hole or you might be able to pick it or chip it out from the front. In the frontal assault you would naturally be taking care not to damage the bolt.
Hope this is some help.

Subfan,
Reading your description indicates to me that you have opened the action and the spent case is stuck in the bolt, not the chamber. This has nothing to do with the need for a small base die.  You may have tired brass, defective brass or reloads overcharged. Now, how to get it out? I would try using an angled Allen wrench inserted into the case mouth and an outwards pull towards the receiver opening with pliers on the other end of the wrench. If you get the case out, examine it for overt signs of excessive pressure. If there are other signs of excessive pressure, such as flattened and cratered primers or primer pockets with black smudges around their perimeter, I would suggest discarding the reloads. You may want to measure the case head with a micrometer if there are no signs of excessive pressure.

Thanks guys, I pretty much destroyed the casing and still can't get it out.  How does one get the bolt out?

The bolt comes out through the front of the receiver, meaning that you need to pull the barrel.  My suggestion is to take it to an authorized Remington gunsmith in your area and have him do it.  It's not as big of a deal as pulling the barrel on a bolt action rifle, so the expense is probably not going to be quite as big.  You'll want him to check the ejector and ejector spring while he has the bolt out, and obviously take a look at the extractor while he is at it.  I agree with Targshooter, in that you need to toss all of those reloads.  Good luck!
