Whch .22lr setup??
« on: August 18, 2004, 05:17:52 PM »
My b-day is coming up, and I want my parents to either buy a scope, and a rimfire .22lr, or one or the other.  The scope I want is the Swift Premier 4-12x40 Matte Black, for $115.  I have seen alot of reviews with people using these (on tricked out or normal rimfires), and I really like swift scopes.  What do you ppl think about the scope suggestion.  (I think my parents could swing the $115 no prob.)

Now to the most important part..........the gun.  I want the Thompson Center Classic, but it just cost wayyyy to much for my parents to buy me (around $300).  So I have narrowed it down to 2 (tell me if you have any other suggestions):  Marlin Model 60, or the Ruger 10/22.  I am about to have about $100 to spend, but can wait until I have enough for either rifle.  The main thing I am looking for is accuracy, and function.  I don't want it to jam (although i know it happens to the best of 'um), and I want it to be accurate for hunting situations (probably .5 at 50 yds. would be reasonable [especially with a 12x scope  :-D ])  So which one would yall recommend......?? (I can get the marlin 60 for $105, and I am not sure about the ruger 10/22, but I think i can get it for about $145+)  The only problem I have with a ruger is the short barrel.  Even being a kid (6'1, 155 lb.) it feels too small, is this normal for a rimfire??  I have not held a model 60 yet, but i like the looks of it.  IT MUST BE A SEMI-AUTO FOR ME TO EVEN CONSIDER BUYING IT........B/C OF SQUIRREL HUNTING....MAKE SENSE??  Thanx for the help ahead of time.......it is greatly appreciated!!

Well goose I cannot say what gun is right for you. If you are over six feet as you say though you can forget about any smaller guns. You definately need adult sized guns.
I am personally not a 10/22 fan (there are many of them just not me), that is not to say they wouldn't be good for you though. I am not really a fan of semi-auto either paticularily in a hunting senario, I prefer bolt guns or levers, but to each his own.
The main things you should consider IMO is the fit of the particular gun (try it out if ya can), accuracy (bolt guns tend to do better stock I think but 10/22's can be modified to do quite good), and price.
There are many, many nice rimfires out there and I suggest that you hold as many as you can and work the actions on them too.
For years all I wanted to use was a bolt action (really like them), but now I have a Henry lever that does great and I love to shoot it.
I guess what I am trying to say is there are TONS of really nice rimfires out there, just be sure you like it it and please be safe. I was shot once it is not fun at all.Oh and don't forget to have fun.
Sorry I couldn't help more.
Almost forgot.... HAPPY B-DAY too, hope it works out for you!

if i was u ,i would save another $100 be4 buying a rifle and get one that u will always be happy with. ive gone through alot of .22's and can give u some good advice on some of the good ones.like for $189 u can buy a cz452 beechwood stock bolt action rifle that will drive tacks at 50yards.and for $189 u can buy a marlin 7000 automatic rifle that will shoot with any tricked out 10-22's.and the marlin bolt action 880sq rifle is just as accurate as the cz, but u have a heavy barrel, and it goes for around $199.do what you like but this is just my opion on it..i hope u you have fun with what ever u choose. let us know happy shootin!
