Rain Crow?
« on: June 30, 2004, 02:27:09 PM »
Any of you guys know anything about a bird called a raincrow?  When I was a kid, my grandpa would have me listen to a bird's call and tell me it was a raincrow.  He said it was calling for rain.  It sounded like a turtledove or whipporwill to me but he said it was a different bird.  He never showed me one or a picture of one.

I'm too lazy to do a web search and I'd believe y'all 'fore I'd believe them anyway.  Them computer geeks don't know what wilderness is.

Loader 3009.
I think everyone will differ with me on this but your grandpa was right. I have only seen 2 rain crows that I know of in my life. These were pointed out to me by oldtimers. They sound like a dove but they are a little bigger and have a longer beak. The Books say they are the same and everybody I talk to say's the dove is a raincrow. The whipporwill is a different bird and I haven't seen one in years here in WV. in years. They used to be a lot of them years ago. I used to set on the porch with my Grandpa on his farm years ago and he would mock them and they would answer him.  By the way we haven't had any quail her since the late 70ths either. Carl L.

The"Raincrow"is not a Dove but is a Yellow-Billed Cuckoo. It is a bit larger than a Mourning Dove and has a yellow bill.It derives it's name from it's habit of cooing before summer rains. It spends the winter in South America.

If an animal activist is being mauled by a bear should we stop it , or , " let nature take its course?"

Thanks, Dan.  That's some bird.  I am amazed that the chicks "hit the ground running" so to speak.  I guess Granpa knew his birds better than I.  I feel priviledged to have heard the call with my own two ears, as it looks like they may go the way of the carrier pigeon.

Again, thanks for the link.

My dad use to kill every rain crow he could that was eating the Catalpa worms in the Catalpa trees around his house. After reading my print out about them I got from you guys web link plus some search engine work, we have both had a change of heart about it. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Mike

ps. How many of you know what a Catalpa tree is ?

We used to call the beans "monkey cigars".

Have to pinch the worms in half and turn them inside out.  Eat with your right hand, pinch with your left. :)
