No. 11 caps, which brand best/worst?
« on: July 29, 2004, 06:06:13 AM »
What brands do you use, and why?  I have only used CCI and Remington (I think CCI I have used both standard and magnum?).  I have had a few misfires over the years, not sure which brand (I think CCI).  I need to pay more attention.

Related question, if I am shooting one brand, would I expect a difference in group size or even my zero by switching brands?

CCI magnums have been my choice in the past, never had any problems with them...have used RWS for a while but musta had a bad batch, had quite a few duds, fortunetly is was for fun, not for huntin. I have switched over to the RWS flangeless musket caps on all my inlines, way more fire for hunting purposes, so far no complaints.  Can't use 209s here for hunting during ML season.

I have been using the CCI for my T/C Renegade. I just bought some RWS to try.

I use CCI or CCI magnums most of the time.  I also had problems with RWS duds so I will not hunt with them.  I used Remingtons this past hunting season and have had no problems with them.

I use CCI.  Can't see any diff between the magnum and the std ones though.

Often "dud" caps are caused by a poor fit on the nipple.  Just something to consider the next time it happens.

My grand son was having misfires on his .36 with CCI our last trip out.  We had installed a new nipple and we found that the caps would not slide all the way onto the nipple.  A few minutes with a fine file reduced the diameter of the nipple and problem solved! :-)

All the RWS duds were duds, proper fit wasn't an issue, they had no priming in them. After using a few I started looking in em, they were just mfg errors. I've heard of CCI issues of the same problem but never had em in 8-10k caps.

Never had a problem with the CCI either.  Have not used any RWS for years but will keep your exp in mind when shopping cor caps

Way back I used to get "Italian" caps and they were very hot and reliable too.

Concerning the RWS problems, I am familiar with an RWS Dynamit Nobel 1075; is this the one those who had problems are referring to?

Also, there is some mention of proper nipple fit required.  I did not realize the caps differed in measurements enough to be a factor - I will have to be aware of that.  Are there any other issues of problems, maintenance with the nipple?  I have really not examined mine for wear, I didn't know really what to look for.  Is routine replacement after a certain number of firings wise?

I have had a misfire when lined up on a nice buck, but got a 2nd chance an hour later with no misfire.  I do NOT intend to risk a similar problem on my upcoming Colorado elk hunt, which prompted my questions in the first place.  Thanks to all who have helped.

Nipples vary in size as well as caps so it's a good idea to make sure they fit well when at the range instead of waiting to check when hunting after changing either. Nipples can become peened at the top and caps won't fit well, can be fixed with a little judicious trimming with a hand file or replacement. I don't remember the RWS particulars, it's been close to 10yrs since that happened, but it has taught me to look at each cap to make sure it has priming inside before I cap up when hunting. I like my caps to fit snug and not loose, makes em stay on better and also makes it easier to waterproof my ignition when hunting in foul weather. I would recommend you use a good grease that is used for breech plugs to coat the threads with when installing a nipple, does 2 things, makes em easier to remove and prevents water from following the threads and ruining the powder. I have used automotive anti-seize, TC gorilla grease, beeswax/neatsfoot oil and lately Super-Lube for nipples and breech plugs. Once you get sighted in, I would not recommend changing brands as it could change the accuracy, but probably not by much as far as hunting accuracy goes. For one thing, knowing that a particular load combination shoots real good adds a confidence factor to your hunting/shooting skills and makes for a nicer hunt.     hth,   Tim

The RWS caps I had trouble with came in a red can (or possibly a silver can with red stickers) I don't remember the number but the caps had green priming compound inside.  I had several misfires with those caps, I also found a few missing the priming compound as quickdtoo mentioned.  I used those caps to blow out any moisture in the breech or nipple prior to loading but would not use them for hunting due to the misfires I had experienced at the range.

I used to buy RWS by the log (10 pack) recently they switched over to plastic containers. The last muzzleloader shoot I attended, I had many mis-fires, thought it was a bad can, threw them away and opened a fresh can and still continued to mis-fire every 3rd or 4th shot, a fellow next to me gave me a can of CCI magnums, I finished out the match without problems. Because the RWS's were 1075 out of a dozen or so nipples only 4 would work. I've always liked and used RWS, but after my last misfortune I think I will get rid of my remaining supply of RWS and make the swith to CCI Mags.
