Wider FOV - Weaver GS or Monarch ?
« on: August 04, 2004, 04:52:59 AM »
I'm going to buy one of scopes:
- Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x40 AO
- Nikon Monarch 4-12x40 AO
I need you advise. Which scope has wider FOV (field of view)? On www side I read that Weaver GS
has 10,5 feet for 14 mag., but Monarch only 8,5 feet for 12 mag.
Is it truth, more or less?
How about the sharp range for this scopes?
I like when scope has sharp view for long distance, I haven't to use AO so often.
Which is better?

This isn't going to answer your question directly but I hope it sheds some light on your concerns.

Any time you have a scope with an AO feature you MUST use it at the upper powers especially. If you don't you'll find nothing is clear or usable. Just the way scopes with AO features work. Somewhere around 9X or maybe 10X depending on the scope the need for an AO feature becomes really almost mandatory. I find most 3-9s do OK with out it even at 9X but I've yet to see a 2.5-10 or 3.5-10 scope that didn't need AO even if it didn't have it. I find 10X unusuable without AO.

You really should be able to find the low end and upper end FOV of both scopes on their websites. If not look for the eye relief specs. Which ever has the most FOV will have the least eye relief and vice versa.

I'll comment on which scope is better.  I have many Nikon Monarch and pre-monarch scopes and they have NEVER failed me.  They are bright, clear, sharp, and track very well.  I once had my Nikon 3.5x-10x-50mm mounted on my Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .270 Winchester.  I was walking down a steep slope and the rifle fell out of my hands.  The gun (with scope) slided down about 10 feet or so, going over rocks, etc.  I though the scope would be damaged, but it wasn't.  In fact, I took it back to camp and shot it.  Guess what?  It held it's zero!  Wow, boy was I surprised.  So do I recommend them?  Yes.  I own about 7 of them and couldn't be happier.

As for the Weaver GS, I have only used them at the range and their optics seem good, and their tracking is excellent.  No long term use, nor do I own one, but from my limited experience, the GS scopes are very good.  The one thing I don't like about them is that they have a very short eye relief.  I know that you are concerned with FOV, but I'm more concerned with eye relief, especially on harder kicking rifles.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but from personal experience, I would recommend the Nikon Monarch.

Here is the information on the FOV for both:

Nikon Monarch 4-12x40    25.5-8.9' at 100 yards

Weaver GS 4.5-14x40      22.5-10.5' at 100 yards

I recently got one of the Weaver GS in that configuration..and mounted it on a 257 Weahterby...I haven't used it in the field yet...but have  from the bench...it is one of the nicest scopes I have had,in a long time. The eye relief isn't as bad for me as some other brand scopes...and it isn't as long as the Leupolds..but it still gives me (for my eyesight) right at 3.5" for the 4.5 power setting and close to the same for the 14 power setting. It is defenatly bright and clear edge to edge..The AO is dead on the yardage...using my lazer range finder...and it tracks true thru all the power settings...and it doesn't darken out appreciable when zooming to the 14 setting. So far I'm pretty happy with my choice...

Weaver Grand Slam

I have one on a T3 6.5-55 and I am very pleased.  The kicker for me was clarity, quick focus, and price.  By the way when I got home I pulled out my 300 mag. with 5yr. old Vari-X 3.  The weaver had better clarity, crisp clear view to the edge , eye relief was more than enough for my fit to shoulder, wide FOV, quick focus for older eyes, and cost less than 1/2 of a really great scope for it's time.  So I guess they are all really good scopes!  As with most things you will have to use it for a few years to finalize your opinions.  The Grand Slam is made in Japan, I understand and they have great optics also Meade the telescope company bought Weaver I was told.  Buckfever

Thanks for all the help.
I still don't know how is the sharp range for fix power (for example 8x) and fix AO (about 27 yards).
I use only air rifles for short distance 10-50 yards. I want to have sharp view of this distance without screw AO and power.
Has anybody this scopes that compare both (Nikon vs Grand slam)?
I recently bought (from Jon Jackoviak  :D)  Weaver V10 and Simmons Aetec.
Weaver V10 is not good for my adaptation in relation to depth of sharp.

By the way, why the american's www-shops can't to sell scope with mildot
to our country? Poland is member of NATO too.
