"Black Bear Attacks West Virginia Bowhunter"
« on: November 06, 2003, 10:35:19 AM »
Picked this up off another forum.  Shows that tree stands are NOT SAFE to hunt from.  Headline reads "Black Bear Attacks West Virginia Bowhunter" and the forum where it is at is;

http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=206212&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1

No excuse for the attack except the sow wanted company for dinner.  Anyone have any more about this attack?  Lawdog

Nice to see that others are having fun with bears too.  Makes hunting a whole lot more interesting when you not on the top of the food chain. :eek:

The DNR is wondering if baiting with "sweets" has caused a problem since there have been several run ins with bears here. There have been two attacks in three months but one was a cornered bead with the guy training his dogs blocking the only way out . A squirrel hunter had a bear sizing him up as have two bowhunters. The DNR said bears get hooked on sweets like we do to certain drugs. BTW, baiting bears here is illegal here.

i disagree.   as soon as i read "sow with cubs" it becomes a protection issue.  she had him; if she really wanted to, she would have finished him.  we bait the hell out of bears here in wisconsin; and i usually am eating donuts on the way to my stands.  bears dont monkey.   although we are not allowed to use any meat or grease for bait.
 i have a 2 second rule.  bears have 2 seconds after i show them what i am to be gone,  and then i start shooting.  2 seconds is about 1 3/4 seconds more than it takes for a bear to get gone.  i have never had to start shooting.

myronman3,

I must disagree with you when you said
Quote
"sow with cubs" it becomes a protection issue.
 The sow had every chance to leave with her cubs but instead she tried to get at the hunter.  Even climbed another tree to get at him.  With everything in the way(hunters tree stand, etc.) she wasn't able to get a good hold on him or he could have and most likely would have been a goner for sure.

"The majority of black bear attacks appear predatory,"
This is a direct quote from U.S. Geological Survey research biologist Tom Smith.  He is the keeper of the Bear Matrix, a computer database compiling information on more than 500 bear attacks that have occurred in Alaska since the early 1900s.  Smith and others like him agree that the vast majority of Black Bear attacks are because the bear has decided to have you home for dinner and guess what the main course is?  I have been hunting Black Bears for over 40 years and in that time I have come to know that the Black Bear is the more unpredictable of bears.  You can't trust them to do what you always expect them to do.  Lawdog

most attacks on people are not predatory.   once a bear has you, you are done.  if that bear was able to put enough hurt on that guy to put him in the hospital, believe me it had him.
yeah the bear could have left, but chose not to.  they are like people, every one has a different personality.   she obviously was an agressive bear that felt threatened and handled it in an abnormal way.
blackies have taken full grown horses around here.   there have been many run ins in my area in the last few years, and in every case the bear could have killed if it wanted to.  if a bear can kill a horse, a man dont stand a chance.
unpredictable, yes.   powerful, certainly.   most times they just want to be left alone.   i have eaten more bear than bear have eaten me!

recovering in a hospital in Harrisonburg, Va. Rockingham memorial hospital. That hospital is connected to James Madison University where I went for undergrad. Lots of big deer in the valley there. (and mean bears too)

There have been more attacks from blackbears than grizzlies. Years ago since bow season for deer and rifle season for blackbear in Vermont overlaps we like to pair up one of us hunts bear while the other bow hunts deer its a lot safer I never really thought about it till it read this article we always just did it.   I have had the most experienced bow hunters get nervious in the apple orchards full of fresh bear sign.  We would split up in the orchard but we weren't far apart.   BigBill

My uncle told me when I first went bear hunting the only thing a man can out run is a chicken so make your first shot count!!!  He was right.  Funny for many years my uncles made the trek to Vermont from CT. hunting so me and my cousins started carrying on the tradition too so we have been up there for over 50+ years now.

More info from the WV DNR, there have been a few incidents with bear in the area where the man was attacked. Bow and squirrel hunters have reported bears folowing them in the woods. This is why the DNR is wondering if baiting is at least partly behind the problem. Baiting is illegal here. BTW, the game laws have changed in the past few years so that you can carry a concealed with a permit while bow hunting or fishing. Maybe a big bore handgun is in order..

I always understood the bear attack issue to be as follows:

Mother with cubs, regardless of bear species, she attacks to protect the cubs. She feels your a direct threat to the cubs. Mothers with cubs will often attack much larger bore's if they get to close even if the bore shows no interest in the her or the cubs. I beleive this to be the majority reason a mother with cubs attacks a human. I'm sure if she and her cubs are starving, she will attack to eat a human. Most people, who have been attacked by mother/cubs, live to tell about it. This means to me, she did not want you for food. Because if she did, you would not live to tell about it. If she wants to make you lunch, you are dead meat.

Black bear attack (mother without cubs) in general are preditary. The bear wants to eat you. The bear is very hungry and not enough food source int he area.Playing dead wil not work. Im fact, palying dead will get you eaten. Fight like hell and perhaps they will try something less willing to fight.

Griz attacks. They are mostly territorial. They attack because they sence your eating there food source. Because these bear are usually very large and visious, you are usually killed by the attacking bear, not nesesarilly eaten.

I've never been fond of NY state's rule about not being able to carry a concealed handgun while bowhunting.  There are dangerous creatures in the woods, two and four legged.  As a LEO, and pistol permit owner, I believe it to be very prudent to be able to carry my 3" S&W 657 when I am in the woods, no matter what the season!
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Raging480,

This may sound funny coming from someone that has carried a badge for as long as I have BUT I pack a weapon even in National Parks.  The sign over my desk reads;

I WOULD RATHER BE JUDGED BY TWELVE THAN CARRIED BY SIX

I live by those words.  Lawdog
