T/C loading problems
« on: August 07, 2004, 06:27:10 AM »
just bought a new t/c 50 cal black diamond, using 2-50gr pyrodux pellets and 295 gr power belt bullet. every 3rd or 4th shot it hangs up about 3 inches from the bullet seat mark, you can hear the pellets hit bottom, even patching between shots dosen't seem to help, anyone else have the same problem or the answer?

First off Welcome to GBO.  :D
It is the crud ring in your barrel from the powder baking into the barrel. You may have to use a bore brush to help remove it.  I use to put a little bore butter on the powder belt prior to putting them into the barrel. It would help get past the crud ring. I switched to a 25ACP conversion in my Encores and it has almost eliminated the crud ring. I have load up to 30 power belts with out cleaning. I was using triple7 instead of pyrodex. ope this helps.

Another Suggestion

Get yourself a good range rod (Knight makes one at about $25).  They're long enough and have a good handle - it will help you break through the crud (a fact of life with T7).  I found my T/C rod that came with the gun would get stuck, forcing me to pull the breech plug in order to get it out (had to push it out the breech once it got through the crud ring as I could not pull it back out the barrel)  with the range rod, you can work back and forth once you get into the ring to free the rod.  Also, if the problem is bad enough, you may consider running a patch through the barrel more frequently.

Good luck!!

I agree with rj03491.  Get yourself a range rod and swab between every shot for the best accuracy.  I use T/C #13 or Butch's Blackpowder bore shine between every shot followed by a dry patch.  Water or spit would probably work just as well.  I scrub vigorously especially the last 6" or so of barrel near the breech.  I never experienced the "crud" ring until I tried Triple 7.  Its not a big deal, just scrub it out every time.  You will be shooting from a clean barrel in a hunting situation anyway.

Range Rod Suggestion
« Reply #4 on: August 08, 2004, 03:55:47 PM »
If you don't want to carry another rod with you everywhere you go, check out XS sight systems (you can find them with a Google search).  Their, "Power Rod" is an excellent hybrid.  It will fit in the rod holder of your gun and has a folding handle that  functions just about as well as a standard range rod (I swear by mine).

I also note there is mention of the 25ACP conversion in this thread.  I have gone to this myself, and do agree that while it doesn't eliminate the crud ring, it does mitigate it significantly (making it worth it's $60 cost).  I'm still determining if it improves accuracy - not sure yet - stay tuned!

thanx for the info, i also used a tornado brush and it really seemed to make a difference. also tried the bore butter and that helped to. went thru 20 rounds not to much problem and switched to the 245 gr power belts, shot 20 rounds with no hang ups. maybe it could have been a difference with the lot number or the barrel breaking in. still have to finish adj my scope getting good groups in the 3 in range at 65 yards but hope to get them better before deer season. again thanx for the help !!!
