45-70 Loads
« on: August 08, 2004, 07:47:09 AM »
I just bought a 16" 45-70 for my Contender, and would like to load some 300 gr RNFP cast bullets.  Anybody have any favorite loads using Reloader 7?
Thanks.

The contender book shows loads Starting at 40 grains of RX7 with jacketed slugs.A MAX load is 55 grains. It also states "At no place in the data section was recoil NOT objectionable!" Pressures SHOULD be less with cast than jacketed loads but there are no gaurantees.I use another powder in my T/C .I tried a load of 38 grains of RX7 with a 380 grain bullet with little sucess. Please start low with this round and work up as recoil WILL get painfull.

I've seen the loads for jacketed bullets, but when I looked at the most recent Lee book, there was a difference of 10 gr in starting loads from the jacketed 300 gr to the cast 300 gr.

Good luck with the cast bullets.I have tried 300gr cast many times over the last 6\7 years in my14" tube with brake.Jacket bullets work well but cast scatter everywhere I think it may be the brake as some guys have said.If i slow the cast way down to 1000/1200 fps they do better but i can do that with my Ruger in 45 colt.
