Rummage Sale Find
« on: July 30, 2004, 09:00:23 AM »
Went Rummageing today and got a great find. Found 2 Calipers made by Motutoyo. One was a Dial Caliper and one was a Digital Caliper. The digital had a dead battery so I did not know if it worked or not. They wanted 5 bucks for both of them I offered $2.50  and they said ok. Went and bought a battery and the digital works fine. Came home and looked them up on the net and the model numbers are off because I suppose these are a couple of years old but the CHEAPEST ones of this brand I could find were 75 bucks for the dial and 90 bucks for the digital. So I figured I came out like a bandit. Be great for my reloading measurements. I have a RCBS dial fiberglass one, but nice to have extras and the digital is nice to read. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I have digital and it is very nice.  Nice find.  I never had the patience to go to garage sales and look at all the junk to find something good.   But it is a very good idea.  I should start checking them out.

The last Mitatoya (spelling?) dial calliper I had lasted 20 years. and I am a tool maker by trade so you can imagine the use they got. To be honest I prefer the dial to the digital. I find it faster and easier to use.  KN

Excellent finds.   A venier caliper will outlive your grandchildren.  Fewer points of failure.  That's what I learned on so that's what I bought a few years ago.   I have my dad's old pair made by Mauser as well.   Not sure if these are pre war or post war either way they still work fine but are a bit hard to read.
