Deluxe First Aid Kit
« on: January 18, 2003, 10:48:38 PM »
Not many people out there have a good first aid kit.  It is usualyl some $8 or $12 dollar special that has a few small samplings for stuff that is of minor scrape and bruising consequence.    But the one I created from scratch for my family to use is very very useful.   For one you will need to track down one of them 70's 80's-ish Samsonite makeup luggage kits,(they also make decent utility boxes.)  They can probably be had for $3 to 8 at nearly any garage sale or pawn.  They are pretty common.   When you get one you'll notice it has a tray. sid epockets going all around, and a large spacious bottom.   In the tray I keep the bandages, gauze, butterfly bandaids, band aids, antibacterial creme and a few other odds and ends.   Under the tray in the pockets I keep all the small tools of the wannabe triage user. (No I don't take medicine, just stuff you wish you had and never do.)   Tweezers are a must, with three different points it's prolly overkill but you never know.  Then there's three needles incase you get one of them hard to remove splinters.  And since these aren't generally steryl you'll want to include a lighter too.   Cotton balls in a little snack baggy, small bottles of common medicines as Advil, tylonol, activated charcoal, antacids, a snake bite kit and even eye drop medicine can be crammed in these pockets and tray.   In the bottom you have a lot of extra space, anything from alcohol and hydrogen Peroxide to small splints and tournequettes can fit in it. (Maybe all of the above, never checked.)  With about $50 and a few hours time you can make a much better more decent first aid kit than some pharmecutical can make, and on the plus side the container is more durable and you'll know what is inside and can more easily add to it to fit your needs.
Time is the fire in which we burn.
