question about shipping firearms

tell your friend to check with the firearms registry.I doubt ifyou can do it actually, due to import /export licences- many sporting good stores in the US don't do it due to all the red tape-it isn't worth the bother.Americans can bring firearms across the border to hunt with- but that's a diferent story-they have to preregister them I believe.
The irony of all this is we have a huge  illegal handgun cross border trade that is basically unimpeded-they are freely available in almost any downtown bar and on the streets. The only gun trade  that was impeded by the restrictions was the legal one- remember that when you guys go to the polls.

you need approval from the cfc in your area. you need to prove to him why  the rifle needs to be imported into canada. can he pick it up in the us and bring to canada, or is it too far away?

To lawfully ship it out of the U.s. you need a a Department of State Export license.

Visit the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls website  http://www.pmdtc.org/ for information on a one time export license.

Here are couple of places that will also ship guns out for you.

http://www.buffaloguncenter.com/ and http://www.simpsonltd.com/

Contact them for details.

There is a lot of incorrect info on the internet re; importing firearms into Canada. There is some on this thread.

I import firearms from the U.S. These are sporting firearms [rifles or shotguns] for my own use.

Here's the procedure.

I apply to Dept. of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa for an import permit. There address is. Dept of Foreign affairs and International trade, p.o. box481,Station A, Ottawa,Ontario. K1N 9K6. The form you need is EXT1020

I fill in the form , send it to Ottawa. There is no charge for any of this.Turn around time is 10-14 days. Any problems contact Clive Law. He is in the dept and very familiar with the process. Good guy to deal with.

While I'm waiting for the permit, I have the firearm shipped to Leroy's Big Valley Gun Works in Glasgow, Montana. They have an FFL. and are also very familiar with the process. Their phone number is 406 228-4867. I deal with Denise. she is very sharp.

At the same time I take the info on the gun and register it with CFC.

Denise does the U.S. paperwork and sends the gun to me by postal service. Customs intercepts, inspects, checks for registration and sends the gun on to me. Time from Montana to my door 7-10 days.

I pay $5 customs fee and GST on declared value. I pay Leroy's $85 for shipping and all the permits/paperwork required in the U.S.

It is painless as long as you have your ducks in a row, i.e. info on gun ,forms filled correctly.

I just got a Benelli SBE last week. I get a gun every few months.

The process could take as little as 4-6 weeks from the time you sent the application, if you sent everything express post.

Opened the mail this afternoon and there was the receipt from Leroy and Denise for a gun they are importing from Australia for me. Decide to jump over here and post them up but I see Redfrog beat me to it. I forgot that had set to do exports also.

I can recommend the Leroy and Denise very highly from both sides of the counter, as a customer and as the Inspector clearing their shipments. They are very conscientious and thorough.
