Any recommendations for me?
I have the 209x50 barrel and get decent groups at 25 yards (2" 5-shots) benching the pistol. I'm shooting the 240grn XTP with 80 grns of Pyrodex.

When I try to shoot the gun free hand, I have trouble hitting the bull. I hit 5" high consistantly on a std 25yrd pistol target.

I'm using open sights since no scopes are allowed during muzzleloader season.

Any suggestions? Should I move the sights even though the gun is dead-nuts when shooting from a bench? Should I decrease the powder to minimize the recoil?

I would keep trying it off hand. If it is shooting good off the bench, you should be able to hit the same place off hand. I do a lot of bench shooting myself and when I switch to off hand, I am not as accurate but I am in the same area. Also when I shoot handguns off a bench, I only rest the barrel or forend if it is a contender or Encore pistol on a sand bag. I do not rest the grip on anything. That way I mimic a off hand hold. It works for me. If all else fails adjust your sights. Good luck and good hunting.

Based on my lesson learned today (see my .22 problem post), I would go w/ redhawk's advice. Try shooting off the bench again without the grip rested. I bet you'll see a big difference.

If you need a good steady rest for while in the field try using a shooting stick/sticks. They can be great hiking staffs and turn into a resonable field rest in a matter of seconds. But one thing , no matter what you do, is remember this. Shoot as if you would hunting in the woods. You dont get a sandbaged benchrest out there, so practice freehand, rested with sticks, sitting....however you would be out there.
