Grungy 454 brass
« on: September 01, 2004, 03:48:13 PM »
I shoot 28gr of win 296 under a 300gr XTP-Mag bullet in my SRH. The exterior surface of the brass gets filthy with each firing. Even the groove above the rim gets black.

I tried tumbling them in Lyman's treated media and the brass just gets yellow/green dust on top of the grunge. ISSO liquid brass cleaner gets most of it off but leaves the brass very dull.

Anyone have a foolproof method of cleaning dirty brass and what is the best way to polish it to a smooth & shinny finish?

I use the same bullet over 32 grains of 296 with a small rifle magnum primer and don't have the sooting problem.  As far as cleaning them, could you lightly brush them quickly with a bore brush on the outside before tumbling them?  gS

Sounds like you are not getting a good seal of your brass when the cartridges are fired.  BUmping up the charge a bit may clear some of that up.  I checked the Hornady manual and at 28.0 grains of 296, you are actually going below the minimum charge weight.

The Dillon Rapid Polish worked very well for me on getting the smooth shiny finish.
Cases were the .45 Colt and the really dirty ones were loaded with 8.5gr Unique.

Varmint Hunter,
I've had the same situation and what i have found that works good is. Take a can of carburetor cleaner and put in a can or somthing with an open top and put your cased in and slosh them around a little, Take the out and wash with soap and water then tumble. This has worked for me and the brass comes out like new. Hope this helps..........Joe.......

I'll try increasing the load a bit to see if it results in a better brass seal. Heavier loads have been experimented with previously but seemed unnecessary for shooting whitetails, so I settled on the 28gr.

I just bought a can of H110 so I'll try that too.

Think I'll also try a different media in my vibratory case cleaner. The media that I used was Lyman's "corncob green".

Bump up the charge, then try walnut media to clean them.  They may still come out kind of dull, but they'll be clean if you leave them in there long enough.  If you want more shine, use corncob media and a little polish.

BTW, 296 and H-110 are the same powder in different containers.

I have read that W296 and H110 are the same powder. Interestingly though, the loading manuals all give different data for the two. Sometimes the recommended charges are quite different, or allow for different maximum velocities.

Lot variation should not account for this much variation, but who knows. I'm out of W296 and have a new can of H110 so the switch is on.
