742 in 6mm: a deer gun?
« on: August 18, 2004, 07:13:22 AM »
What is the opinion on 6mm Remington for deer sized animals? I just came back from Vermont’s NEK and the local grocery /gas station/hardware/movie rental/gun store had a real nice Remington 742 in 6mm for $240. I would have snagged it, but I don’t know much/anything about the 6mm. Feedback please?

I have to respect the 6mm Rem.  I know a lady who kills bucks with it.  I was surprised the damage the 100 grain CorLock does on a deer.

The 6mm is well up to the job with proper bullets. If you hit the kill zone it will work  and work as well if not better (quicker) than a larger caliber.

I killed one deer with mine and a friend killed 3 with the same gun.  Mine was a head shot, the other three were chest shots - all one shot kills.

Seems OK to me.

Nothing wrong with that combo. Most of the guys in deer camp shoot 742's in 30-06. I've shot several deer with a 243, the land owner only use his 6mm and a friend has a 6mm in a 7600 pump.
Go for it.

I've killed several with a 243 and one with a 6MM Rem.  It was a 35 yard neck shot with Remington 100gr. core-lokt factory loads.  Matter of fact, its the only deer I have ever killed with factory centerfire ammo.   He dropped like a wet newspaper.
