first porker

I've been living down here in hog heaven (South Texas) for a while now, and we've got hogs all around. Strangely enough, I've never shot one until yesterday. I was just stepping out of my Rodeo to start scouting for a place to put a new deer blind when out trots a 300-pound boar just happy as you please. He came jogging across a field angling a little toward me about 150 yards out. Trouble was, my gun was in its case with trigger lock on and ammo stashed under my tools, etc. in the back of my Rodeo.

By the time I got the gun out, trigger lock off, and ammo loaded, he was ducking into the brush. I slung my gun, a 6.5 x 55 Swede I just picked up a month ago, and angled into the brush to try and intercept him. Working slowly, I got close to even with where he went into the brush. The boar swings around toward me from the other side of a prickly pear bunch maybe 6 or 7 yards away. I raise the Swede and he stops, trying to figure out what just moved in front of him. By then it was too late-I popped him right between the eyes and he went down like a boulder crushed him. Kill #1 for the Swede and my first porker!

Way to go!  Ya just never know what you'll run across, do ya?  I wouldn't step out on my lease without being ready for anything from rattlesnakes to hogs.  So, did ya find a spot for the blind, or is that an excuse for another outing?

huntsman... Congratulations on your first hog.  Sure gets the ol' heart rate up doesn't it.  Like Dennis, I never go on the lease without some type of firearm.  You just never know when you might need one.

:D  Congrats on your first pig.  I'm jealous.  These pigs just sound like too much fun not to try at least once!

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, guys.

Let's see, first its DennisB's question about the blind. Yes I found a good spot on the crest of a hill where an old gas pipeline runs through the property. Ready-made sendero in two directions, and a natural crossing spot (same one that porker used). Now I just have to build the blind and get things situated before it gets to be 100 degrees out. Only have a few more months! What do you mean, EXCUSE to do another outing? There's always a REASON for me to be out there, and I never quite find time to do it enough. :(

And Ironknees asked about the bullet. I was using PMCs 139 grain bronze line ammo. Don't know exactly what bullet they use, but it is a pointed soft point. I know it has good penetration, because sighting in we grazed a mesquite tree and it tore through about 8" of solid wood and kept going. The bullet on the hog smacked him right through the skull and went on to severe a main artery (probably the jugular vein or carotid artery, possibly the aorta) further in. Piggie just stopped, dropped, and rolled over, but there was a gush of bright blood that came out of his mouth almost at once. Think I just grazed the brain (low at 7 yards range) because he thrashed about for about a minute before calling it quits. Good brain hits usually turn 'em into instant carcasses in my experience. Either way he is a dead boar.  8)
