Thanks

nealglen:  Uh, it sounds like you have the rifle slung in such a way that possibly your back, hip or butt slaps the lots open and then, of course, the bolt would open all the way of its own weight and the bullet would drop out.  Do you carry with a round chambered??  That might explain it.

I would try holding the rifle in that position and shaking it to see if the bolt is so loose that it opens of its own accord.  If not, I would suspect the back/butt/hip bit.

I would also try carrying the rifle barrel down - I also use a piece of electrical tape to cover the muzzle to keep stuff out.

If she locks up tight when you chamber a round then she shouldn't open up on you like that.  HTH.  Mikey.

Is it a three postion safety and do you have the safety on? I don't think the bolt should open if the safety is on!

If you have the JC Higgins Model 50 like I do, I can tell you that prior to my inheiriting it my dad had the same infrequent complaint. I have NEVER had the problem with the same gun. I think its because the wing safety, when the gun is carried on the right shoulder, catches things thus unlocking the bolt. Now why the bolt opens, I am not sure. Might have a smith look over the wing safety, maybe its worn and needs replacing (piece of cake).

I don't think you have a problem with the gun.  You need to carry it differently. I HIGHLY recommend a Safari Sling, with which you can carry the gun in front of you and keep an eye on things.

Congrats on having a very fine rifle!
