Factory vs Handloads- Misfires in the Encore
« on: August 16, 2004, 11:18:50 AM »
I am working with a new .280 barrel on my Dad's Encore.  We have shot it 10 times with my hand loads and anothers hand loads.  It has misfired 5 of those 10 shots.  I think I probably am dealing with a chamber that is cut a bit deep, and the dies are not adjusting the shoulder properly.

My immediate question is.  Will I likely fix the problem by going to factory loads?  My secondary question is what is the easiest fix for this?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds as if it is not locking up properly. Have a good gunsmith check it out...

Factory vs Handloads- Misfires in the Encor

If it functions properly with "Factory ammo" then I would say you are not full length sizing , A encore action can close but not get a good lockup If you have not bumped the shoulder back . Neck sizing only has not worked out very well for many with the encore/contender

UPDATE!!!

We shot 1/2 a box of federal classics (factory) through this barrel yesterday with NO misfires and about 1 1/4 in groups!!!

I am starting to think that the problem was the nut at the reloading bench. I have been reloading for about 15 years, but I sure don't claim to be a know it all.  Anyway,  I think we found a solution (short term) for the misfire problem.

Encores are also finicky about having to pull and hold the trigger all the way back. If you don't you get a misfire.
