it makes me feel a little better about living in the 21st century!  Definitely one of my most valued tools for the outdoors.

cant tell you how many times I've thought the same thing. I can mark new areas when out scouting and actually find them again. Save myself long hikes back to camp when in the mountains. explore new lakes and woods, and find them again. I got along fine without it, but cant imagine not having one along as one of my most useful tools these days.

I agree - the best thing to come along for hunters, or anyone who moves around in the woods, in a long time. I'm pretty good with a compass, but it sure is nice not to have to worry about readings every few minutes, and staying in a more or less straight line. I always have a compass with me, but after I get a rough reading, I turn on the GPS and go. It's nice to step out of the woods, and be right back at your starting point - no fuss!

How DO you do that???

Just use the Tracback feature or follow the arrow from the navigation page back to your starting point.

I don't know a thing about the GPS tools except what I read here. Considering getting the Garmin extrax since it won't kill my pocketbook and it sounds easy to use. Do I loose my settings when I remove the batteries in order to replace them? How long do batteries last? Thanks for any/all replies.

tucoblue,

The yellow Etrex is great. I had one for 2 years, and just upgraded to the Legend. You don't lose any stored data when you change batteries. A lot of times, I leave it on the whole time I'm in the woods. Batteries will last about 8 - 10 hours, depending on if you use the backlight or not. There is a video or DVD available for each Etrex model that will show you all of the features, and how to use them. The tapes are only $10, and worth every penny. If you've never used one before, you'll wonder how you got along without it. With that said, you should ALWAYS carry a compass too - just in case.

Amen it is a very good tool to have. Its as important to me as having my gun on a hunt.I do alot of coyote hunting and walk alot.Just being able to walk a big loop and come out at the truck is great.

I used to walk a big loop but didnt always come out at the truck.I just came back from a hunt that was three hours away.I hadnt been there in 4months and this was my second trip.I went straight to were i was before from my saved waypoints. This would have been hard for me to do in the dark before. In the past i have went hunting and in the darknees parked to close to were i wanted to hunt. Now i waypoint were to park and were the set up is going to be.I use the Etrex legand
Without Plumbers there would be alot more crap in the world

Thanks for the feedback. Based on these favorable comments I'll go with the etrex yellow. This will be a new adventure for me. Never used a GPS before. I'll likely die in the woods trying to find myself. Oh well.....
