300wsm bullet recomendation
« on: January 22, 2003, 07:34:29 PM »
I have a Encore barrel in 300 WSM that I want to use for elk and deer. I want to use same bullet. I have it throated longer than the Winchester  bolt gun I measured so I don't have to deal with the shot magizine problem  in bolt guns. the barrel maker recomended Barnes X  140 gr. as a do all bullet.

IF you are going to shoot the short, stubby 140 grain bullet, why did you have the barrel long throated?

longer throat
« Reply #3 on: January 23, 2003, 07:14:27 AM »
I had the throat made longer because the 140 Barnes X  seat into the brass WAY PASSED the neck. Barnes recomended 50 thousands freebore on their bullets and because the bullet is seated deep into brass I had to reduce loads. The 140 gr bullet is not short and stubby,  solid copper.   Might as well have a 308  or 30-06.

A 180gr Partition or Swift Scirocco should take care of anything you might run into.  I've shot deer and elk with both bullets with great results.  The Swift is pricey, but has better ballistics and is normally more accurate than the partition.
