just for plinking !
« on: August 17, 2004, 04:24:25 PM »
now that my 17 sporty shoots good patterns, i am considering getting a 22 LR barrel for it. now i have an old marlin tube feeder that shoots good, but i have no 22 rim fire handi. i really enjoy just plinking away with rim fire ammo, it's like masking tape, cheap and plentiful.

i could just order the barrel or get a whole another handi.
how much fun is the 22 rim fire sporty ? is it worth it ? is the 22 magnum a better choice ?

SG,
I have two Sportsters in .22 (actually I have 4, but more in a moment)...

I got them for my kids and my wife and I to "just plink" and they do that wonderfully well. So far we have primarily been shooting the Colibri no powder rounds because we haven't gone to an official range, just to a friend's property where he has about 20 yds where we can shoot.

These guns with the Colibris are very accurate and very quite. (Even quieter than my wife's Crosman Mk1 CO2 pistol) We have shot a few rounds of Rem hollowpoints at water filled gallon jugs, but mostly the quieter ones.

As for your question about whether .22LR Sportster is good for plinking, my answer is a resounding YES!

So now for the "more in a moment" I have four, two are still unfired, new in box. If you decide to get a whole new rifle instead of replacement barrel, let me know, I'm open to sell/trade one or both of them.

We really don't need 4 Sportsters. My kids are only with me part of the summer each year, and 2 NEFs will do us all just fine... besides my wife likes shooting her Henry lever and I, my Marlin 39 Mountie.

Cheers
Kerry

I wouldn't send it in for just a .22LR barrel, if you can get a new one for $90 or so. You spend $55 for the barrel, $10 for fitting, $10 for return shipping, probably $10 to ship it to the factory, and you're looking at an $85 barrel.

Scattergunner,
You can probably get one in the neighborhood of $100 at Walmart, Wholesale sports etc. Add shipping as appropriate.

I got my guns for $100 + shipping (and then $25 for FFL) thats why I am asking $125.

By the way, I think this would be an awesome grouse gun - assuming you hunt the wild grouse with a .22 - and I do - I love grouse hunting with a handy accurate .22

Cheers

Just something else to think about. If you just want a gun for plinking go with the 22lr. Ammo is cheap but if you think there is ever a chance you might use it for foxes or coyotes go for the 22mag. Also for plinking the 22mag gets pretty expensive at 6 to 10 dollars for 50. :money:  :D
