7mm-08 for hogs?
« on: April 09, 2004, 05:04:17 PM »
I really hate to have to ask this question, but i have very little experience with this caliber so what do  you think? is a 7mm-o8 enough  gun for neck, head, or chest shots at say100yds or less? Lets assume the shooter can place the bullet reliably.  i know it works fine for whitetail but we all know hogs are ALOT tougher. Thanks

wipartimer,

My granddaughter used her 7mm-08 to take her first Wild Boar this year.  One shot, one hog.  She was using a 160 gr. Nosler Partition and put it where it didn't do a 207 lb. dressed Wild Boar any good at all(his heart wasn't in it anymore).  Range was just over 180 yards(by my range finder) and the boar dropped at the shot.  Complete pass thru leaving a good exit wound.  Put your bullet where it belongs and the 7mm-08 will do the job.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Thank you Lawdog, That's exactly what i was hoping to hear! there is alot of talk around hear about using cannons to knock and keep a boar down. Obviously, bigger is better, and i do have some idea how tough a hog can be, but my 7mm-o8 isthe only rifle i have that i could either lone to a friend or let my 12year old daughter use to get them involved in my annual texas trip for the other white meat. :-) .

wipartimer,

My granddaughter just turned 12 and got her hunting license.  That boar was her first big game animal.  She got her first turkey Friday morning using an old bolt action Westernfield 20 ga. that I had scoped just for turkey hunting.  Actually I believe that I am the one having all the fun out of taking her hunting and the success she is having.  Right now she is the envy of her siblings as they are finding it hard to have to wait their turn.  Life Is Great.  Lawdog

According to my Speer reloading manual the 7mm-08 can launch a 175 gr. bullet down range at about at about 2600 fps.  For my money, that's not enough "smack'm" for a large boar unless you get an EXCELLENT shot and hit exactly where you point the gun.  If, however, you are looking for a younger animal for the freezer then I believe you've got plenty of gun there.

With a good stout bullet and proper shot placement (remember, a hog's heart is further forward and lower than a deer's), you should be just fine.  I happily shoot pigs with my 6.5X55 using 140 grain Barnes X bullets with great luck.  The key to a successful pig hunt in my mind is a good exit wound that will leave a good blood trail.  Small entrance wounds tend to seal up with fat and not bleed.

I hunt with a friend who uses a 7MM-08 95% of the time and I've seen numerous medium-long range kills with that gun.  Have no fear, that caliber is perfect for big hogs.

My brother-in-law took a 175lb boar with his 7-08 and 140gr bullet. The same nite, I took a 200+ lb boar with my 6.5x55 and 160gr bullet.

Neither one made a step after the shots.
