480 Ruger Case Condition
« on: August 20, 2004, 02:14:39 AM »
Veral,

I have a Ruger SRH with 9 1/2" bbl. My Two loads are a 275 gr Speer GD HP with WW296 at 1600 fps and a 410 gr WFNGC CPB with WW296 at 1250 fps. Both loads shoot well and extraction/primer condition are ok. My problem, if it is one, is the fired cases come out of the chambers all smoked up. I mean really bad. Is this normal?

Hi, Not Veral, But this is Fairly common with the slow burners and with cases that have been fired a few times. The brass has work hardened and with the W296 loads the case does not expand to seal to the chambers before the gases start escaping. The 480 is very similar to the 475 in thickness and are over built so to speak. I have had 475 cases smoked nearly to the case head. With the cast bullets it may even be a little more severe due to the lube. A firmer crimp will help some to get it lit good before things start moving so to speak. Also you may want to Anneal the case mouths. However if this does not cause any case extraction problems I would not worry about it. The dirtier they get only means your practicing more!!. Have fun with your big bore.

This is really NOT the purpose of this forum. IT is to ask Veral questions regarding cast bullets, bullet casting or about his products. NOT general type reloading questions. In 24 hours I will move this to the Reloading Forum where it belongs.
