Winchester White Box 223 45 grain?
« on: August 20, 2004, 06:19:30 AM »
I bought some of these and was wondering if these are explosive HP or the HP you find on match ammo? The match HP are not very explosive.

Does anyone know what the deal is with is ammo?

Thanks

I've shot a few jackrabbits with it out of a Contender and Encore.  It's not pretty, I can tell you that.  As I recall, somewhere on that box it claims maximum, violent expansion for thin-skinned critters.

Never shot the stuff in .223 but the same "white box" ammo for 22-250 is a great deal. Accurate and priced right, besides you get the brass too. Definitely varmint bullet and very fast in 22-250...I get right at 4000 fps.

Definitely not pelt friendly.  They are very violent, great for varmints.  I haven't shot a long range coyote with them yet (may not, looking for a less destructive round) but the last one I shot at a little over 50 yards had a 4" hole...  My barrel is 1-7" twist and under 50 yards I've gotten entry wound blow ups, 4" craters.  With a 1-9" or 1-10" twist that might not occur, I don't know.

I'm going to try some Remington 55 grain psp's.  Not as cheap but should be much more pelt friendly, small hole in, reasonibly small hole out.  Most of my shots are 15 feet to 75 yards so most ballistic tips in 223 are also too explosive for pelt saving, large exit holes.  I guess maybe I need to break down and get a 22 hornet or use my 22 mag.  Decisions decisions....

But anyway, the varmint box JHP is VERY explosive.

Scruffy,
You didn't say if you loaded your own or not, But if you do and want to save your pelts, Let me offer a suggestion, I have found that with any of the 22 calibers from the hornet to the 220 swift the best bullet i have found is the 37gr calhoon, It don't seem to matter if you are close up or at long distance you pelts will fare much better. If you are interested i will give you his adress or you can look it up. the name is James Calhoon in
Havre, MT. Zip 59502 (406)-395-4079. Good man to deal with. Good luck with your coyote hunting and stay safe.........Joe..........

Scruffy If you are looking for a fur friendly coyote cartridge, try American Eagle ammo. It is inexpensive and kills them graveyard dead.
I buy the 52 gr. or the 55gr. they both work well in my Ruger #1. in .223
Usually no exit and the coyote sloshes when you pick 'em up.I've used them on fox as well with good results. If I do get an exit , a large hole would be dime sized.

I tried the white box and found it accurate enough, but did not kill with authority on coyotes.I had some runners that should have dropped in their tracks. The bullet explodes on impact and I didn't get the penetration that I needed. They are great for gophers though. :-)
