just back from the moose hunt

We were pretty much soaked when we got to camp. Open 100wt army trucks do that to ya when it rains.
Rained a lot during the week too. We went out anyway.
The moose gave us the slip until thursday at around 5 pm when one of the boys stumbled into one on his way back to camp. Nice eating size 40" classic bull. We're guessing that by the time he was quartered we are looking at 400 lbs of meat.
Sad part is that it was the only moose seen all week. Lots of sign, just never when we were there.

Similar story here - but without the success.

We were calf hunting, and had a couple in the area, but the two of us just couldn't get in front of one.  We had to keep ignoring all those adult moose tracks we kept coming across.

We also had a bad leaf problem.  There were still some green leaves on some of the understory when we left.

Not quite as wet where we were though.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

The creek we drive down on the way in was up to the axles, and on the way out was up to the top of the 10.00 20 tires on the truck Leaves were still on fairly heavy, but not as bad as a few years back. There was not a lot of fresh browsing, but quite a few tracks. Saw a number of calf tracks, and lots of venison. Plenty of bear sign too. We were even "dogging" with two guys by Wednesday. It was looking like we'd take the tag home. Really sad, as we saw seven last year. Oh well, I'll post pics when I get them.

Sounds like fun.  I recently learned that I may be going on an eastern canadian moose hunt in Sept. '05.  Coincidentally, I recently bought a used rifle which would fit the bill nicely, a Rem 7400 in .35 Whelen.
So, I guess I should expect some wet weather, huh?  Is there any other info you guys can give me as far as what I can expect, tips, and inside info, what I should bring?  I know I will be talking to the guide as well, but I thought the more I know, the better.
I will start off shooting 200 grain rem. Corelokt ammo when I start shooting the gun.  I am not going to be reloading for it, is this ammo sufficient for moose?  Factory offerings also come in 225 grain TBBC, and Rem. 250 grain Corelokt.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Be prepared for anything from blackflies to snow. Every year is different.
I'm not personnaly familiar with the Whelen, but I understand it is a fine moose cartridge.
