50-70-750 ?
« on: August 21, 2004, 09:07:59 AM »
Anyone shoot one of JD Jones' 50-70-750 barrels?  It sounds like fun. I may go to a rifle barrel as a companion barrel to the short barrel if this turns out to be a project. Probably would use it on a Encore frame. But the pistol project would come first. I have done a bit of local pistol hunting for whitetail and squirrels. I find I still like rifles as much as pistols. Still, it sounds like fun trying 1000 yards with a military bullet designed to fly long distances, only out of a short barrel. Has anyone shot these caliber barrels? Anything similar? TIA 'Dito

I would intend on long range targeting and hunting. I was wondering about barrel lengths, firing characteristics, bullet selections you have used, target shooting you have experienced, and any hunting experiences you may have. I'm most interested though, in the long distance shooting. It sounds like fun.  Thanks for anything you can share. 'Dito

Bandito;

 I have not hunted with it all.long range steel targets are fun though.I can up to 400 yds at the range I go to.I have tried a few bullets the barnes 300 gr looks like it is round but it does good for close in work.I shoot mostly 647 fmj and tracers,ap and a few others.I did shoot a cow with a 647gr fmj at about 20 feet.Went right threw her head and out the other side and she just hit the floor.she was sick and the farmer asked me to put her down."I AM NOT SAYING TO HUNT WITH THAT ROUND"I would go with the 50 Alaskan in the Encore or the 12.9x50.8 from SSK if you want to hunt at long ranges.Just got my 1.9x50.8 XP-100 and it shoots great.Loading is easy JD gives you some good data,dies a real expensive though.I plan on shooting up to 800gr bullets in my XP.  Wade

I've had my .50-70-750 Contender barrel for over a decade and it is a handfull.  The 300 Barnes bullets have low recoil but their very poor sectional density makes me think they would not work well on animals - this cartridge was designed for heavy bullets for goodness sakes!  The 450 Barnes is a better choice, but recoil becomes an issue as you approach max loads.  I hunted with 500-grain RCBS bullets I hollowpointed to 475 grains at around 1300 fps.  Recoil is fierce with this load in the lightweight Contender, but the caribou I shot didn't go far.

The 650 FMJ bullets at 900 fps aren't bad recoil-wise and are good fun, just not too cheap.  The tracers are the most fun, but be aware that they can and will start fires if shot into dry brush.  Be careful!
