what would you say about this gun?
« on: August 25, 2004, 07:48:16 AM »
know that i know 17hmr is good i'm making sure i get the right gun.

i'm thinking about getting a savage 93r17-gv in 17hmr (heavy varmit barrel) with scope for long range target shooting at 100 yards+.I was wondering if you thought that this gun could definantly do less than 1 inch groupings at 100- 150 yards. If you guys think another gun could outperform this for for less that 230$ with decent scope than please let me know.
The gun i'm looking for would be an easy to maitain gun that will have great accuracy from 100-200 yard distances. thanks for your help and suggestions.
thanks
Ben

PS:do you know of any site i could read some rifle reviews to gain knowlege on your suggestions?

What are you going to be using it for? 22 LR or 22 MAG does the same thing with better results.

If you plan on eating any of those squirrels DON'T get the .17 HMR.  With body shots what meat it doesn't turn to jelly it bloodshots.  Been there and done that.  Go with the .22 WMR.  Lawdog

I disagree with the last two posters.   I have only found one type of .22 mag ammo that has a bullet that allows for good grouping.  If you happen to have a .22 mag that shoots that round well you are in good shape.  If not then you will have much larger groups than you will have with a .17 hmr.  I have two .17 HMRs and two .22 mags.  For what most folks have the .22 mags for (hunting) they are more than accurate enough.  They are no where near as accurate as a breed than the .17hmr tend to be.

For shooting game you wish to eat there are some new bullet choices available that fragment less that the older ammo does.  And with a .17 HMR you have the accuracy available that if you put a good scope on it you can take the little critters with a head shot and not ruin the meat.

I have a Savage .17 heavy barrel. It is the most acurrate gun I own.
For small game hunting a plain old .22 long rifle is fine any make any model. For target shooting and long range fun the .17 is a sure fun
way to go! Good luck.

22 LR or 22 MAG does the same thing with better results.

The 22 lr does NOT do the same thing as the 17HMR - try this , zero yor 22 lr at 50yds and shoot a group and then shoot a group at 100yds with the same scope settings. Do the same with your 17 HMR.

Try some 100 + accuracy testing with your 22lr vs the 17HMR.  The 22 Mag argument makes more sense.

thats what i've heard - that the 17 hmr is much flatter trajectory and a more accurate load for target shooting and small game.
thanks for the info on your gun txsurveyor, lol....that gives me confidence.

I can't understand the 17HMR. It's too destructive for small game at close range, and it's dramatically deflected by wind at longer distances. Prairie dogs are too big for it to be a humane killer. So that leaves what? Ground squirrels on calm days?

The "new" Hornady Custom .17 HMR 20 gr. XTP JHP ammo has a muzzle velocity of 2124 fps. and muzzle energy of 201 ft. lbs..  Not bad but we tried them against the "new" Remington Premier .22 WMR 33 gr. V-Max Boat Tail ammo has a muzzle velocity of 2051 fps. and a muzzle energy of 308 ft. lbs.. This new Remington ammo shoots almost as flat as the .17 HMR Hornady ammo and just as accurate.  And the best part is the .22 WMR is drifts less in the wind than the .17 HMR.  A good friend of mine has a Ruger M77/17(I have a Ruger M77/22 that has the same length barrel) and he is shooting the new 20 gr. loads.  We compared them to the new Remington .22 WMR load on ground squirrels and the .22 still wastes less meat than the .17.  The nicest thing about the .17 rimfires is they forced the ammo manufactures to start making new/better/more accurate ammo for the .22 rimfires. Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I have been to the Hornady web site and seen their posted velocities for the .17 HMR XTP -https://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=53 - but what I reported was the average we got shooting them over two different chronographs.  It still doesn't take away from the fact that the new .17 20 gr. XTP bullet are not suited for the taking of squirrels or small rabbits for the pot.  Lawdog

Ben, you'll just have to limit your small game taking to head shots only, a feat easily attained with the 17hmr. I find that the TNT hp just leaves 22LR like holes in squirrels at 100-150yrds, haven't shot any closer than that, yet.

Another range report, FYI....

The 17 HMR 17 Gr.bullet and the 22 Win. 40Gr. power point HP bullet are about all I used to hit about 1260 prairie dogs sofare this year. The 22 LR was used for shots out to 60-80 Yds. The 17 HMR for shots out to 180-200 Yds. At 200 Yds the 17 Gr bullet must hit the head-rib area for a clean shot. At 200Yds.the 17HMR delivers 72 FPE so I would not use it for anything bigger than a prairie dog at that range. I would not use th 17 HMR for small game unless I could take a head shot after seeing how it damages prairie dogs.  The new 17 HM2 may be a better small game round. I,v ordered a 17 HM2 rifle and ammo to find out what it will do on small game.
