.50 Alaskan

The .50 Alaskan was a wildcat cased on a .348 Winchester case blown out to .50 caliber.  It was chambered in rebarreled Winchester M71 and late production M1886 Winchesters.  Produced out of a gunshop in Alaska in the 1960's.

It was designed for a peculiar niche market...that of closeup stopping power on dangerous Alaskan brown bears, moose and elk.

Expensive non-standard bullets and limited market is what killed it.

No, I don't think either Marlin or Winchester will make them standard rifles.  It's not cost effective to produce rifles that have such a specialty market when more popular calibers such as .480 Ruger and .475 Linebaugh are available.  It's more likely that the S&W .50 will be a standard chambering.

As for wanting one, the Ruger Number One is a more suitable platform for this powerhouse.

Dave,
I go along with John in that the ruger #1 in a short barrel would make one heck of a good brush gun in this cal. Good luck.  ..............Joe............

Hello,
A friend an I have built a duo of 98 mausers in this caliber.  Performance is stellar to say the least!  525gr. gas checked Cast Performance bulletshttp://www.castperformance.com/?uid=170&page=1658on Commercial Starline brass. www.starlinebrass.com
Velocities averaging 1855 fps with no sign of over pressure.  The #1 Action is strong, but if what you want is a bear getter, I would recommend the lever action.  Wild West guns makes a spectacular take-down guide gun in lever action.www.wildwestguns.com

Dave,

I have friends that own and use the 450 Alaskan and swear by them. One neighbor has a recent construction built on the Browning 71 by Lee Penwell of Nabesna Alaska.....26" barrel with full length magaxine gives him some weight  for taming recoil....he claims ballistics similar to the 458 Winchester.

Hi Everyone,
I am a little behind on the subject.
I have a 50 Alaskan in a marlin.
If you want a gun to put anything down and out it will do it.
I have a NEI 570 gr mould that looks like a over size wadcutter, with a gascheck.
Out of the a 20inch barrel at 1700pfs plus.
The plus of a lever is you can shoot and load one back in the gate,an still have one in the chamber!

Wilbe Lead,
Was your 50 Alaskan on the Marlin bought as is or did you have it built? If you had it built could you comment on what modifications where required to get it up and working?
Cheers...

50 Alaskan Lever

Dave, in either case, you'll have to go custom - I would think the lever action would be the top choice in a 50 Alaskan.  The same folks in Alaska @ Wild West Guns offer a 500 S&W lever action now, too!  Another alternative is to go with a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and install a 475 barrel on it.   The full length 45-70 can be blown out straight to yield the 475GNR which is NO slouch either.

Picture below and on the link shown, has the 475GNR illustrated second from the right...

http://www.reedercustomguns.com/information/GNR_cartridges.htm

475 GNR
"Next up is our 475 GNR.  This one we developed back in 1987 for the Contender. It is a 45-70 blown out straight and with a 475 caliber bullet seated in it.  It puts a 430 gr. LBT bullet out at 2000 fps and has been used extremely well on Cape Buffalo, Bison, and Australian Buffalo.  Best in the Encore or in a Marlin 1895 rifle rebarreled.  Brass is available."

GOOD LUCK!
