Which would be the best?
« on: August 03, 2004, 10:04:16 AM »
I am looking into buying a .22.  I dont want it to be very expensive so I have been looking at the Marlin model 60 with the tube feed, and the Ruger 10/22.  I have been able to find them cheap, but I would like to have a gun that can shoot short, long, and long rifle shells........but I want it to be a semi-auto.

Does anyone have any suggestions.....I saw one Savage that can shoot s,l,lr, and was a semi-auto, but I dont remember which model.........

Thanx for the help ahead of time........

Goose - which model Savage or Mossberg? Why  no CZ's or Marlin bolt guns (both better than model 60)? Of the 4 on the list, the 10/22 is best because it is a better design, and the spectrum of aftermarket improvements available. The Marlin bolt guns in the last 3 years are also very good, as are the Savage bolt guns....don't like any of the semi autos except the 10/22, maybe the T/C....

almost forgot - I don't know of a semi auto that will shoot shorts, longs and long fifle, mixed or not. Most semi autos must be operated single shot or manually cycled with shorts or longs - it becomes an exercise in futility very quickly....

I dont want a bolt action, because it just isn't practical for my type of hunting.  I dont want to have to jack in another shell after every shot at a squirrel running through the trees.  They may shoot a little better, but dont fit my purpose.  Really the only reason I want to be able to shoot the smaller bullets, is so that I can practice in my backyard......shooting blue-jays and other birds.  Just keep me in rythem for hunting season for deer or ansy other game animal.  I have heard alot about Ruger 10/22 but I can get the Marlin model 60 for cheaper.  I found one website that is selling it for $60.  I would look at other brands but I am on a very limited budget.  I may just wait till i have a little more money and then buy a Ruger, or a good marlin, CZ, Browning, etc........

I do not know which model Savage or Mossberg.....I will look it up and get back to ya'.

Thanx.......and keep it coming.

then all things considered, I agree with TC300mag1, get the 10/22 - I own 3; I had a Marlin 60 and was not happy, neither are shooting buddies who had them, though many people swear by them here on the forums-  I swore at them, not by them! Get the Ruger, stick with factory magazines, try lots of brands of ammo, clean it and shoot the heck out of it....you might also consider a peep sight on the Ruger; I have one of mine set up that way - prettey slick and plenty accurate - cheaper than a scope....

This is a stupid question but what is a "peep" sight??  Is that what most comes come with, where you have to line up the one end (closest to the shooter) and the sight at the end of the barrel??  I am confused about what exactly a peep sight is.......can someone explain and give me a website/picture of what one looks like??

Thanx and keep it coming.......

no such thing as a stupid question! - a "peep sight" is an aperture sight, also known as a receiver sight - you look through a hole on top of the receiver instead of a buckhorn or v notch on the barrel for the rear sight - I think Williams makes one especially for the 10/22; try the Brownells websight; a large holed aperture sight is called a "ghost ring" - such as used on some shotguns, pistol caliber rifles, etc. You can probably find a used one fairly cheaply; a new one runs about $30 or so I think...pretty slick, light, accurate, low profile and cheap....

I can buy a Stock, barrel, and "v" sights already assembled for a Ruger 10/22 for $40 (brand new).

I know I would have to buy things like the magizine, trigger, trigger gaurd, and receiver........would it be cheaper to but the Stock, and then add on the other parts, or just buy it completely done??

Thanx

I've never seen any auto-loaders that will function properly with the less powerful .22 shorts and some won't even operate with the .22longs.  There is a Volquartsen conversion kit avail for the 10/22 that will allow the use of .22 shorts.  The 3 cartridges may likely NOT shoot to the same point of aim anyways.  Best to pick a particular round and stick with that one.
Without going nuts on custom items, look into a 10/22 Rifle (not the std carbine).  It'll give you a slightly longer sight radius and therefor in theory will help with better accuracy.  Forget the buying as pieces path as buying the receiver will require a FFL anyways and they alone are near impossible to find used and a stripped new one will be in the $80 range.  Unless you're gonna go all out and fully accurize it for bullseye shooting, stay with buying a complete factory model.  Proberly cheapest at a Walmart or similar store.
Also, going cheapest isn't always best.  Don't rush just to buy the first model you can afford.  You get what you pay for applies greatly to firearms.
May also want to be carefull about your choice of practice targets as some areas really frown on that type of practice.  You'll be much more likely to become more proficient with the gun by being able to see on paper exactly where you're shooting and be able to adjust the sights as neccessary.  besides, there just something neat about seeing how many shots you can put into one small ragged hole.

You bet I'm looking forward to fall!  :-D  I'm obviously counting the days! The only thing I can do now is dream about my new muzzleloader (hopefully a T/C Hawken). Oh well.

From where I am sitting now I can look up from the monitor and see both of my T/C Hawkins on the wall.  One is a cap lock with a Green Mountain 31" 1 in 72 inch round ball barrel.  The other is the flintlock that I learned about rock locking with, and has a T/C round ball barrel on it that is 28 inches long.  At 50 yards they are tack drivers.  And one would even be legal in your state.  Hope you like yours as much as I like mine!

Had a stainless 10-22. Loved it. Gave to my Dad. Had a Marlin Papoose. Loved it. Sold it. Don't won't a semi for the moment. Just got a Savage MKII and sorta like it. Check out Remington's Speedmaster. Hear it will function with .22 Short,Long or Long Rifle.
