I am looking at the 3x9 in both the 40 and 50 mm objective.   It will go on a Rem Custom mountain rifle in .270.   I plan on using Leopold dual dove tail base and rings.   I am 45, and wear only reading glasses.   I will be hunting in the hills of WV.   Is the extra light from the large objective worth 2 oz in weight.   Cost wise in my local store the difference is only $20.   Thanks for any feedback.

Depends on what time of day you're shooting, that extra light could mean the difference between success and failure, many older bucks don't show themselves until the last few minutes of legal shooting time. You also need to consider that the larger objective will require higher rings, scope height is a big consideration for some, depending on how well you mount the stock. hth

This is my opinion, but here is Michigan we have legal shooting hours 1/2 hour before sun rise and 1/2 after sun set.  Typically a 40mm will allow you to shoot up to the legal shooting time with no problems.  I personally would take the 40mm over the 50mm, because of I like my scope as low as possible along with being able to take a deer under normal shooting hours.  This can be done with the 40mm objective.

Jon,   As a side bar, is the VXIII for 04 worth considering for the extra money.   Also, will the 2.5-8x36 work with dual dovetail standard rings, or will it need extension riings.   The gun is a Rem 700 in .270 with a 26" Barrel.   I had considered the VSII 04' but talked to Leupold, and they confirmed the main tube was joined at the turret, and only the VXIII was a 1 peice tube.

I guess I don't know what you mean when you ask if the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 is worth the extra money?  It is actually less then the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.  The 2.5-8x36 should work with your DD rings and bases with no problem.  I actually have the 2.5-8 on a Browning A-Bolt without using extension rings.  Comparing the 2, maybe someone else that has both scopes can compare hunting situations for you.  The Zeiss is a very clear and bright scope.  I would actually give it the edge over the Leupold, but it is very close.

I have a Conquest 3x-9x-40mm and I love it.  I think it's just as good as the Elite 4200, except it doesn't have rainguard, but does have etched reticles.

I like 50mm objectives over 40mm ones.  Why?  Well, I like extra brightness and, something that is usually overlooked, there is greater eye alignment (not eye relief, but alignment).

I really don't care if a scope is mounted just a tad higher than a 40mm objective scope.

I didn't know that the 3x-9x conquest has a 50mm objective - it must be new?  Still, for only $20 extra, I'd definately go with the 50mm!!
