H&R Sidekick, SS with 26 inch barrel.  Should be here this Thrusday.  Where should I start ?  Anxious to shoot the new gun.  Should I use 777 or Pyrodex ?  Thanks.

777 or Pyrodex?

Hey Rupe,

I use both 777 and Pyrodex thru my Huntsman.  The gun likes both but it seems easier to clean using the 777 and I believe it is less corrosive.

Like Bruce said,''Either or on the powder, both work great."

But the very first thing to do is clean your Sidekick good...from front to back, inside to outside...they come a Lil' Dirty from the factory.... Then find what it likes to shoot and go huntin' and Enjoy it. ....MTNMAN

I don't know why, but when I tried 777 pellets in my Huntsman, I was getting misfires.  Just to try it out, I bought a brand new box of 777 and fresh, dry 209 primers.  First 2 loads misfired, 3rd fired o.k. and 4th misfired.  Reloaded 14 more shots with pyrodex pellets, no problems.  Yes, the gun was clean. No, there was no moisture or grease in the barrel or breech area.  I'm stickin' with pyrodex.  It has never let me down.  I left the new box of 777 sitting at the range.

As I understand it the huntsman breech plug isnt designed for pellets. Lots of guys having misfires. I will have to check my manual.

Bubba,
Mine works just fine with 2-50gr Pyrodex tabs...as a matter of fact that's what they said they used when I called them to see what they were test firing with... MTNMAN

I stand corrected. I guess it was the voices in my head that said it lol.  Sorry for the misinformation guys.

Ambushhunter,

777 PELLETS are not reliable in my Huntsman either, they take alot of flame to ignite and the Huntsman Breech Plug is more suitable for loose powders. No misfires but lots of hangfires. The 777 LOOSE POWDER however is outstanding, probably due to the powder sitting so close to the 209 primer.

Pyrodex PELLETS work very well and have 100% ignition with them (they have a layer of Black Powder bonded to the base to assist with ignition). Pyrodex LOOSE POWDER also works very well.

Have any of you used regular black powder in the H&R?  Some say that black powder (Goex) is less corrosive than the Pyrodex or T7.  I shoot a 54 cal flint lock in the PA late season and I have a good supply of Goex on hand.

Busta',
Thanks for the info, I wish I knew that before I paid for the 777.  I generally use 2- 50 gr pellets but I've been toying with the idea of trying loose pyrodex.  My friend says he gets tighter groups with the powder as opposed to the pellets.  I guess that's possible, but pellets are so darn handy, especially when hunting.  I could pre-measure speed loaders I suppose.  I'm gonna play around at the range to see what I can come up with.
