About my stevens and jc higgins
« on: August 29, 2004, 11:06:45 PM »
With all this whoopla going on I almost forgot about my stevens 16 single shot (full choke) It's a smoothbore, but I have to confess, it has killed more deer than any gun I have. And I have my father's 16 ga jc higgins bolt action with polychoke. It's even more accurate than my stevens. I killed a couple with it including my first I shot at fort meade in '83. The higgins is a heavy gun, but it's my father's. Ican remember when I was growing up, he would go out hunting rabbits and that was all the meat we wuold have for awhile. I might have to take the higgins on my first gun hunt this year. I really miss my dad this year. Don't know why, but he was a great man. Wished he could have been around for a few more years.

TOMMYY01,  I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. I know you have great memories. I have found that hunting can bring father & son closer together. I know it has with my 2 boys.
I also have a Stevens 94 16 Ga. Beautiful gun in perfect condition. I have not shot it much, stays clean & oiled in the gun bag. I will sell it if someone is interested. I also have a Stevens 94 in 10 Ga. 36" barrel.(not for sale) Awesome gun. I have a 12 Ga barrel for the Stevens 94 I need to get rid of.

TOMMYY01 I am sorry about your Dad. My Dad passed away back in '81 and I still miss him. Before he died he gave me his guns and bows, saying I should be able to get as much fun out of them as he had. Those weapons are in the safe and seldom get shot any more. But I would not part with any of them. My grandson will have them someday. The only thing that I use that belonged to my Dad is his old shooting tab that he made. Each time I draw my bow when hunting that tab touches the corner of my mouth and I know Dad is right there with me.

Handed down guns are a my most treasured possessions. Mine aren't terribly valuable but just knowing that my grand fathers or uncles used them hunting before I was born gives me a closeness that non hunters can't understand. Rabbit hunting by myself on thanksgiving day with a 16ga sxs stevens that was used my grandpa and his brother Uncle Herald is a tradition that my wife can't understand. In a couple years my yougest son will acompany me and hopefully some day he'll be huntin with that old stevens and his wife won't understand. I plan on taking the other grandfathers old Winchester model 12 out for a goose hunt this year too.
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun
