20 Grain .17 HMR
« on: August 16, 2004, 05:58:22 PM »
Anyone out there shot any of the new 20 grain .17 HMR for accuracy and terminal ballistics yet? I plan to pick up a couple of boxes which I had ordered and have finally arrived and am curious regarding anyone else who has shot it. Any thought as to what kind of a  varmit/coyote round it might make?....<><....

I have both the CCI Gamepoint and the Hornady XTP, they look identical except for the headstamp. There are some shooters at RFC that have done terminal tests with them and they look to be a great improvement for penetration and not blowing up like the Vmax and TNT to a lesser degree. Compared to the Vmax, shot from ~10', the 20gr penetrates almost twice as far in ballistic gelatin and expands to a nice mushroom shape.
They shoot a bit lower than the 17gr and in some guns, just as accurate. IIRC, velocity is ~2450fps in actual use.

I have shot my first 20 grain .17 HMR Hornady ammo (with the XTP bullet) and although it is not quite as accurate as the Winchester (black and silver shoot great for me) and the Hornady 17 grain Maxi-mag the 20 grain is shooting good enough for coyotes at out to 100 yards. I am getting about 1.5" groups initally with the grouping about 3 inches lower and 3 inches to the right of Silver box Winchester, my so far "coyote load". I am hoping to try the 20 grain XTP's on Coyotes within the next month...I'll post any results...if anyone here has any field expierence with this 20 grain load on game I would really appreciate hearing about it...Thanks....<><....

MSP Ret, I'm a little confused, I assume the winchester black and silver box ammo you are refering to is 22 mag ammo, right?  I guess I'm confused by the statement that the 17hmr 20 grain xtp's group 3" lower and 3" to the right of the win silver box 22mag since they're out of difference guns.

Or maybe I just need some more caffiene, thank goodness it's Friday!!!  :-D

Edit: and has anyone heard why Winchester doesn't make 17hmr ammo???  Do they have any plans to?  What's up with that?  :?

Scruffy, You right I'm wrong, I had a brain cramp and was rushing the post. I went shooting the other day and shot my slug smoothbore and my .17 and .22 Mag. I shot the .17 and .22 Mag on the same 5 bull target at 100 yards. This is were my recollection became confused The Winchester Silver box and Black box along with the CCI Maxi Mag were all shot out of my .22 Mag. The Hornady .17 HMR in 17 grain was shot against my newly purchased 20 grain hornady .17 HMR with the TNT bullet. The 20 grain POI was low and to the right of the POI of my 17 grain and the accuracy was acceptable for my coyote hunting forays...Boy it's tough to get old and do to many things at once.....so much to do, so little time... sorry for the confusion, and you were not the confused one, it was me....<><.... :?

17 cal. HMR - Help
« Reply #6 on: September 10, 2004, 10:31:49 AM »
I found a all black Sportster in 17 cal HMR with a Leopold scope. The gun looked clean & in great shape and had a BULL barrel. This shop majors in jewelry and other stuff & minors in guns. They price them to sell quick.
Price was $89.00

Good price  ?
Great price ?
Steal   ?  or
You idiot, go back & get it before someone else does, or either tell me where the shop is!!!

Thanks for any feedback and is the 17 HMR fun for long distance crow shooting??

I've seen 17hmr sportsters from $126 to $250, both new and used.  $89 for a 17hmr sportster AND leopold scope, well, if it were me I'd be $99 poorer.  $89 for the rifle, $10 for the premptive "I'm sorry honey, I couldn't help myself." flowers.

NOW GET BACK THERE AND GET IT!  oh, AND the flowers.  :)

Edit, yes, the 17hmr is a good 150 yard crow gun.

It's all true.  I will go back today most  likely and put some money on it.
Wife said if i spend  1 more dollar on gun stuff, it is over. So I pay a little at a time so she won't notice.

I went today and put some money down on the gun. total price will be 95.00 out the door. The sportster 17 HMR with a bull barrel comes with a Leupold VX-1 scope  3-9x 40mm.  I checked prices on the scope and the cheapest I have found it for is 199.00  .  I will most likely take that scope off and put it on a different gun, and put a Varmint scope (6-20x) on it. Any thoughts??

Sell the scope on eBay for $150 or so, and tell the wife you didn't spend any money for the gun, they paid you $50 to take it. Or better yet, sell me the barrel for $50 and send the action to the factory for .22LR & .22 mag barrels. (I sooo want a .17 hornet barrel for my Handi)

I did put half down on it a few weeks ago. Hurricane Ivan shut down the shop for a while, but the guns are safe. I will pick it up soon.
