I,m looking for opinions. I do a lot of hiking in south east Arizona in the winter months. Lots of mountain lion and bear country. I carry a S&W 629 4 in. Is a 240 HP enough? Or should I use soft points? This isn't hunting, just personal protection.

Since you asked for opinions, I really think I would prefer JSPs or even more, a good cast bullet with a large meplat. In the instances you mention, I would want penetration for sure. Just my thoughts.

Laborer,
Welcome, Your hollow points will work great for the lion, But if you are concerned with bears you might be better off using jsp bullets like the TNrifleman stated. Lions are not hard to kill but the bear is another
proposition. The jacketed soft points will more than do the job for you in either case. Hope you don't have to use either one. Good luck and stay safe...........Joe............
