Help me figure it out
« on: August 31, 2004, 02:06:31 AM »
I have a batch of .41 magnum reloads that came with the Redhawk I purchased from a private source about 8 years ago.
These reloads have proven to be the most accurate loads I've tried in the Redhawk or my Marlin .41 fg.
The bullet is a 210gr JHP, the powder is a very very fine almost like dust. The powder weight is 20 grains.

I'm trying to figure out the powder, I know it isn't  H-110, or W296.
What could this mystery powder be?
I thought perhaps AA#9 but 20 grains is way past Max for me to consider it.
  Any thoughts?
no x now!

Anyway of getting in touch with the person who made up your reloads? If not other than sending them in to someplace to be analyzed...get some of the powders you think it might be a do a very close examination under a microscope......I don't load a-lot of pistol powder anymore so I wouldn't even hazard a guess...

It sounds like a "flattened ball" powder. The description MIGHT fit one of the Winchester shotgun powders. 20 grains is too much for 540 (same as HS 6) but it MIGHT be 571 (same as HS 7.) I DON'T KNOW whether that heavy a charge of HS 7 (571) is safe. I know you know that if you decide to duplicate the load by guessing at a powder you must consult a loading manual to be sure the load you try is safe.

Sounds like it might be AA 1680....although I can't find any listing for loads in that caliber for that powder.

On reflection, skb's guess is a lot better than mine. 1680 looks like what you describe, is in a safe (slow) burning range and would require a charge somewhere in the area mentioned.
