Now I have 2 Tracker II 12ga's
« on: September 01, 2004, 01:24:25 PM »
I picked up a used Tracker II in 12ga yesterday for $100. It is in good condition but shows itself to have been afield with some wearing of the case hardening and a couple minor scratches on the stock, etc.

Wouldn't you know it I found another one today for $85, and it was like brand new.

What should I do?

1) Sell or trade one of them

or

2) Scope one and install peep on the other

Good job maybe you should sell me one. :)

Can a Tracker II be scoped?

It is not recommended by HR, however, MSP Ret gave me the name of a gunsmith who can do it. Many have had it done, just one of those over cautious anti-lawsuit things.

Anyway, the guy is in Mass and he will do it for $45 plus shipping and you send him the mount.

I am in Algonac, MI which is not far from Roseville. If you are serious, let me know, we could save some shipping by sending both barrels at once.

Yeah I am serious but only if I could set it up with see thru mounts. I have a 12 ga ultra slug but would like to have the ability to use both scope and Iron sights for those surprise real close shots.

Well, it would be a standard Weaver Dovetail mount, you could put any type ring on that fits a Weaver Dovetail. You can use a standard HR mount or an Encore mount.

Let me know if you want to see the gun. I'd sell it for exactly what I paid for it.

Hi HuntenNut, I have not been over to see Ed (a great Christian guy I might as, as well as an accomplished and excellent gunsmith ) because we have started the new addittion and there was an excavator and smaller 4 in 1 bucket plus several 10 wheelers around here digging around 2 sides of our home. When we leave the house we have to use exit thru our front door for a while because the kitchen door is a 12 foot drop to the ground (!!!) and we have no exterior lock on our rear slider.

Am I to assume from your post that you have gotten in touch with Ed? I hope you mentioned my name. He must have liked you to to have agreed to do the work without knowing you.  As you may have found out he sounds like a gruff Cape Codder at first  but as you get to know him he is a true gentleman with a heart of gold. I think that was an excellent price for (excellent) work that most gunsmiths won't do!!!

Let me tell you, my smooth bore 24" with scope rail and a Simmons 30mm Red Dot (about $30.00!!) puts Brenneke 2 3/4" MP slugs into one ragged hole at 50 yards and will kill any deer at 100 yards!!!!

Please let me know if you are all set with Ed..Thanks....<><....

MSP Ret,

Yes, I mentioned your "handle" and he knew who you were. I looked up his number on InfoUSA.com based on the name. He sounded pretty impressed with your HR 17 outshooting some much more expensive guns.

I am definitely getting one of the 2 Trackers in my ownership drilled and tapped for a scope. I also like the "ghost ring tracker" that was posted here a while back. Since i have 2 now, I am thinking of doing 1 of each since I am torn between the 2 options:

1) I love the advantages of the scope

2) I like the simplicity and ruggedness of a good peep sight set up

rm,
Don't mean to discourage the plans with huntenut, but if yours is an Ultra 12 there should be enough metal to go ahead and do a regular drill-n-tap since it is actually a 10 ga. blank bored to 12 ga. rifled. Don't know this for sure as I don't have one nor have I actually seen one, just assuming, but it makes sense. Let me know won't you, OK?

My Ultra 12 has a scope mount but does not have sights. They don't come on the ultras. That is why the Tracker sounds good to me, Scope and iron sights. I just hope it will shoot as good as my Ultra. It is what got me started on my NEF quest.

Heck you already own one of the Tracker II's...I would buy the second one and make one a dedicated scope gun without see thru mounts and make the other the rifle site version.  For $185 you would have two extremely accurate sluggers...You can never have too many guns.

rmtaylor,
One thing to consider with the see thrus is the bump in the barrel...you might better go with the weaver scope rail(#82 or 88 don't remember off hand)) because it sits lower to the barrel than the standard NEF rail... allowing a better sight picture of the open sites...even though the weaver mount has less cross cuts in it for scope adjustment with the weaver angled see thru ring you'll find you can make up the difference in eye relief... also allows you to mount both rings behind that bump Y style... Just a thought, MTNMAN

RMTaylor,

You may also wish to consider a different scope on your Ultra to eliminate the "close shot" dilema. While a high mag scope is great for grouping at the range, its way overkill on these guns for hunting. In my opinion, the best scope for these guns is a 1.5-4.5 x 32 of good quality (pick any of the better brands). I happen to like the Bushnell 3200 with Firefly reticle, but there are many good ones. You will typically have around 70ft FOV @ 100yds which is almost like looking through a window at close range. You won't have any problems getting a short shot aimed quick with one of these scopes. These are very popular for dangerous game rifles and often preferred to open sights.

Not trying to discourage you from buying my gun, but if your reason is that you are having tough time with close shots, you may want to look at just getting a different scope. In my opinion, the advantage of the Tracker is its light weight and quickness for walking and driving deer.

OK, I am finally home. I picked up both trackers while on the road for work this week.

I have finally gotten a chance to examine them closely (I didn't want to carry them into the hotel with me, though I really wanted to). I'm leaning now more towards keeping both and I think I know what to do:

One for the left hand and one for the right :-D

No, just kidding. I think I will scope the one as planned and put a marbles peep sight on the other like Leftoverdj did. The peep sight version will be the foul weather gun. I am also considering putting a Choate Varmint stock on the 17HM2, so I'd have an extra set of synthetic stocks. If I was able to trade the Monte Carlo for a straight synthetic, should I put the synthetic on the "Foul Weather Tracker" or should I just keep the wood stocks on?

I actually have a 4x32 scope on the Ultra and have not had any problems with short shots yet.
I did put see thrus on my Huntsman and I just like the sight view. This would have been more of an experiment than a need.
But now I won't have to worry about it. Since we will have a 2 handed shooter in the group
