Puzzling Bolt Weight Question Need Help?
« on: August 19, 2004, 04:01:03 PM »
Ok guys here is the situation. I have a Barnett Ranger straight prod Crossbow 150# 16 inch bolts. Bolts weights recommended are 2216 which came with the bow 2117's can be shot also as they are the same grain weight as the 2216's or I can shoot 2219's. All three are reccomended for this bow by Barnett. I have a 4 x scope sighted in for 20 yards at 30 yards I shoot 3" high to hit the bull with the 2216 or 2217's. Ok here is what is confuseing me. If I switch to 2219's using the same field tips I have to shoot at least 6 to 8 inches low of the bull ( 4 inch circle) and it will shoot a inch or so high of the bull? So why do this weight shoot so much higher? I am not complaining as I can use 2 diff weights for different distances. Nocks are straight ones on the 2216's and 2117s and the 2219's had moon nocks but I cannot see what differnce that would make. I lost one bolt tonite practicing as I shot normal forgot they shoot high and shot over the target! Any ideas why the 2219's shoot so much higher? Jim

jh,are you using the same weight field tips or broundheads, whatever the case may be?125 gr. is the recommended weight by Barnett.Iam using a Barnett Rhino Mag,w/2219,xx75 Eastons (20") and Horton Carbon MX.They both shoot very close to the same........but I also have some of the same Eastons in 22" and they drop short of 35 yrds setting.Which I guess they should.I also use moon nocks and vanes.......Rick

Yes using 125 field tips and 3 blade broadheads. The 2219's have moon nocks  the 2117's have flat knocs as the local archery store cannot get moon nocks he said in 2117's  Barnett gave me some bull story about only using moon nocks as they are afraid that the string may slip over the flat nocks and cause a dry fire but I have seen lots more powerfull xbows use flat nocks so I think they are being overy cautious. I shot a lot last year practicing and this year also with no problems. I think the lighter 2117's may be flexing more and the 2219s are stiffer and sit higher so maybe that is the reason they fly higher? Got a 2216 I am going to nock up and see how that flys as it is inbetween the 2. Jim

Should use the moon nocks as Barnett same as horton and have bottom release, this can slide under a flat nock if you are not very careful. I have shot the flat nock/butt cap with horton with no problem, but like Barnett they recommend moon nocks

Yea I got to get some moon nocks for 2117's I can get them for 2219's and 2216's at the local archery shop but he can only find flat nocks in 2117's or so he says. I have shot it a lot with no problems but I suppose anything is possible.  Have to find a place I can order some from. Thanks for the info and Welcome GaryL. Jim

jh45gun your problem is the butt caps/nocks. Shooting the 2117's , 2216's with the flat butt ends are shooting the same per your post. You switch too 2219's with moon nocks (recommened) and start shooting high.

What is truly happening is the string is hitting the moon nocks in the proper spot (lining up proper) while with the flat butt caps/nocks the string seems to be hitting higher giving you a different lunch from the xbow. This is giving you a different patteren high/low. Stick with the bolt that you feel is what you want to use and sight in and you will have no more problems. I do recommend moon nocks with that xbow, however if you make sure your bolt is properly pushed back against the string flat butt caps will work, but stay with the same size and weight bolt.
