Pistoleer,
I have owned two .308s in mannlicher rifles -- a Mannlicher Schoenauer and a Sako -- and they both were very accurate with the short barrels. I do not think that I lost that much velocity either. I now own a 270 RSI mainly because I have seen one put to deadly use in the field by a hunting partner for the past eight years or so.
I have one of the detatchable peep sights made by NECGW and use it. Some issues to cosnider are that
1. The elevation setting is controled by the screw-in aperture so you must be very careful in tightening it down and check that it stays in place.
2. You also may want to check that the sliding elevation plate fits tightly in its slide. One of the gun writers recently wrote that his had some slop so he lost his horizontal setting when he moved the elevation. He got around the problem by holding the apeture gzmo hard left in its slot when he tightened it down.
Otherwise they are neat emergency gadgets as they do hold zero once set and take only a few seconds to install.
Good luck,
