7mm-08 fps?

Can the 140 grain core-lokt sp really get 2800 fps out of a 20 inch barrel?
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Remington is noted for being conservative. Be that as it may, 2800 fps with 140 gr.'er , out a 20" barrel might be zealous, ambitious, and maybe dangerous indeed.  But 2700 fps maybe possible, looking at Hodgdons H4350 load data. Which is a max of 48 grs. at 49800 cup 2868 with Swift. Or a Hornady 139 gr with 50 grs. @ 47500 cup and 2906 fps. So, if you subtract 25-30 fps per inch of barrel length off a 24" inch .  Each gun and barrel is it's own though, you may end up more or less.
JMHO, the 7-08 is likely the most practical factory round we have for deer. And a 140 gr. bullet, even at 26- 2700 fps, is more than needed for deer in most hunting situations.

billy, billy, billy.

From the 20" barrel of my Browning A-bolt, I get 2,800 + fps. with the Hornady 139g SP and the Sierra 140g SPT. I am using VV N160 and H380 powders. 120g bullets come out at 2,900 + fps., easily!

I had a rem 700 afew years back and checked on some velocity and with factory 140 gr got 2844fps and my reloads with 140 gr bullet got 2840fps.  I shot some 168gr match and got 2563fps.  My barrel was 24".  I think you can get pretty close to 2800fps.  Good luck

I loaded a somewhat mild load using AA2520 and a 140 grain bullet.

In a model 7 youth bolt gun with an 18.5 inch bbl it shot 2,550.  The exact same load in a sporterized, rechambered mauser with a 21 in bbl it shot 2,750.

I've stated all of this to say that I think you would find that bullet to travel out of a 20 inch tube around 2700 fps.

My 7-08 does have a 20 inch bbl and with handloads it will get over 3,000 fps.  But I don't shoot it there as a lighter load shoots better.  Mine is ackley improved so I do have additional case capacity for safely increasing the powder charge slightly over standard 7-08 cartridges.  I would say though that it is pushing about 2900 fps.
