Until it basically died, my favorite mode was a 1995 Toyota Tercel, 2-door, little car. I was getting average of 40 MPG on highway with it, and the trunk held everything I needed plus a big plastic rubbermaid box for critters. Front-wheel drive, it was awesome. I parked on road edge or in drive lanes where permitted, and walked into the sections from there.
I have a New dodge Dakota 4x4 now, and the 14 MPG I can barely squeeze out of it is a huge adjustment on the budget. On other hand, I can carry more equipment and buck some rougher weather now than I could with the little car, too.
