Well let's see if I finally got this pic posting thing down!  This is a pic of my sportster mag, micro groove barrel, 6-18x50 Bushnell Banner scope, floated forearm, harris BR bipod, modified Allen shell holder on butt stock, and "pistol grip" non monte carlo stock.  I'm trying the non monte carlo stock out because I was having to dip my head down more than I like with the more inline barrel/stock setup with the buttstock only having approx 1" drop at heal monte carlo stock.  The non monte carlo stock has a 2" drop at heal so the reciever it 1" higher when shouldered so I don't have to dip my head down as far.  I'm still working out if I need a cheak pad or not, but I'm getting her tuned for my liking.

So without further babbling, here's the pic:

:D , Looking good Scruffy, for some reason many feel they MUST have a Monte Carlo stock with a scope, not true, especially if your hunting and shooting from a standing position. The straight stock is the most versatile after you get used to it, also I find it to be the fastest for locking onto a moving target  (running/trotting/walking deer)....<><....

Nice rifle there Scruffy. I don't think it will shoot very good though so save your time and ammo and sell it to me. I'll give you $50.00 For it. :-D  :D

$50!!!  Wow, I thought it was only worth $25!    Just kidding, for a $103 new I can't believe the little rifle you get.

I just got in from shooting, sighting in the huge 6-18x50mm scope.  The skeeters were so bad at sunset that I only shot at 20 yards to rough it in.  If the skeeters weren't sucking me dry (with bug spray on!) I would have backed out to 50 yards and shot some postal cards.  At 20 yards I put my last five shots into a nice small single hole that measured .410" outside to outside, or .186" center to center.  That's at 20 yards, scope on 18x, adjustible objective set at 20 yards.  Perfectly focused, sharp image.  Gotta love it!

If I have time tomorrow I hope to get some postal cards shot.  Like last time I'm not going to use the bags (actually can't find them, someone must have borrowed them...).  I'm going to shoot off the harris br bipod and a small block of wood under the buttstock, which is what I use out in the field (block of wood is holding up the bipod in the picture, 'V' cut in the top).  Tonight I forgot the wood block for butt stock support so I just used my hand.  It worked, but having the stock supported makes it so much easier.

Yea MSP Ret, I couldn't agree more!  For leaning/laying out over a shooting bench the monte carlo stock work pretty good.  But the more I hunt with them the more I'm finding what you said is true.  The straight pistol grip stock seems to be a more natural hunting position shooter.  It looks like I'm going to have to order a few more straight stocks from NEF!   :-)

Its a 22 mag.

When ever I look at her I swear she's asking to go fox hunting.  :)

But that's a ways off yet.  But come next Wednesday, Sept 1., it's becoming a squirrel's worst nightmare.

I know, it looks like extreme overkill for a squirrel rifle, but so does driving a "hummer" to get the groceries.  I don't have a hummer, but if I did I'd use it for everything from groceries to piano lessons.  :)

scruffy next time you go to the range take one of those skeeters that has bitten you and smear the blood on you target. Then rid the world of a lot of blood suckers with that nice little gun you have there. p.s. in this case blood suckers means skeeters and not lawyers.

Hey, I was wondering when someone was going to comment on that.  Yep, I shoot south paw mainly because I'm left eye dominant.  Most of my scoped righthand bolt guns I shoot righthanded so I can operate the bolt effieciently.  With my left eye shut while looking through the scope I don't have a dominance issue.

With this 22 mag I've had it set up both right and left handed.  Since I shoot my pardner left handed, and my ultra slug has a low power scope and I shoot it both eyes open so I shoot it left handed, I decided it would be better practive to have the sportsters set up left handed as well.  Consistency equals accuracy they always say.

Yes, is yours really really really bright in low light conditions???  I can't believe mine.  I went out two nights ago on the deck, well after dusk when the full moon was almost overhead in the sky.  There were clearings over 100 yards away I couldn't see very well with the nakid eye, not enough light, but could see fine through the 6-18x50mm banner scope.  It's brighter than my other banner scopes (1.5-4.5x32 being almost as bright) and even brighter than my elite 3200 3-9x40.  I have the banner 3-9x50 scope and the 6-18x50, same scope tube, is much brighter.  I can't believe it.  I still scratch my head on how that scope can be so bright.

Before being mounted on my sportster mag it was on my sportster 22lr for a few weeks, and before that it was on my weatherby 270 for four years.  It was an awesome 100 - 200 yard target scope.  I would have shot farther, the scope was certainly capable, but my friends and I just never did.  Next fall (was hoping for this fall...) I'll be taking the weatherby on a out of state deer hunt so I pulled off the target banner scope and mounted a 3-9x40mm bushnell elite 3200 in it's place.  So it's ready for deer hunting now.

And the big banner has found a home on the sportster mag, if it does OK with the squirells.  I'll find out later this evening or tomorrow morning as I'll be out doing a little squirrel hunting.  Season opened today and I'm itching to test it out in the field.

Yes it does gather light very well.
I am impressed enough with the one on my 223(NEF) I have been thinking of putting one on my 22mag (its a Savage...sorry LOL) for night time coyote/fox hunting. Michigan rules state that you cannot use a centerfire rifle after dark.Only rimfire or shotgun with shot smaller than buckshot.
My 22 mag is a tack driver with  4x Tasco at 70yds I could just Imagine it with a 6-18x50 at 70

sounds good to me, I may have to try it tonight or this weekend if there is still enough moon light.

Hey, nothing wrong with a savage rimfires in my book!  I've looked their left handed 17hmr over a few times.  Nice looking rifle!

Brett, when you go into the album you'll see two forums, one for GBO General and one for Members.  Go into the Members forum.  Your pics are the first two (looks like the same pic).  Here's one-

Nice looking pair!!!  I sent you a PM on getting you pic from the album to the posts.  I hope it helps.  If not (it's pretty early in the morning for me to be writing directions...) let me know!

I recently bought a used .223 bull barrel. It didn't fit my 280 frame, but fits fine on my 30-30 and 45-70 frames. I set it up on my 30-30 synthetic with high Weaver 4x4 rings. I've got just enough clearance for a 50mm AO, and when I pull the gun up to my shoulder and open my eye, I'm only 1/8-1/4" below the scope centerline, and it doesn't take much of an adjustment to get lined up with the scope. I've decided that I like the low stock better than the monte carlo.

Well, I thought I'd give an update on the Sportster Mag with the big scope and straight stock now that it has a half dozen hunts under it's belt.  As a comparison, last year the sportster had the factory monte carlo stock and 3-9x40 Bushnell elite 3200 rifle scope.  For me the monte carlo stock was not comfortible and did not have a consitant cheek weld for many of the tree shots.  Also the rifle scope's 100 yard parallax caused me to miss or poorly shoot 2 to 3 out of 10 squirrels.  With the straight stock I have not had one uncomfortible shot.  The rifle always shouldered and sighted comfortibly and consistantly.  The big 6-18x50 scope has a narrower field of view at 6x than the 3x elite 3200, but with the AO set on 20 yards (I'm thinking setting it on 15 yards may be better) I've had more focused shots and have had no parallax issues.  On squirrels I've been 6 for 6, with shots from 15 feet to 35 or so yards, on the ground and out of the tops of trees, and in between.

Also, with the Harris br bipod mounted on the forearm the rifle is extremely more stable for off hand shots.  When I remove the 10oz bipod it's not nearly as stable, not horrible, but very noticible difference.

So I think I have the complete package.  I don't really have any complaints on the setup except for maybe the narrow field of view of the scope, which isn't a problem since I'm shooting stationary targets, just personal preference.  The setup has some weight to it so it's stable, very short and compact, accurate both supported and offhand, and is very comfortible to shoot, and light enough to carry for long times and distances.

I love it when a plan comes together!   :)

In a month or so I'll resight the scope in for Rem Premier Vmax's and try to find some coyotes.  8)

Nice looking gun Scruffy...I think I am going to purchase an Ultra Varmint in 22Mag and then send away for the 17HMR barrel...I dig the look of laminate wood and they don't offer that in 17HMR...Then I could have two nice varmint calibers but I would have to buy two scopes...Ohh....Decisions decisions decisions...
