To all,
Have read several comments here concerning sticking, or stuck, cases. I am seriously contemplating the purchase of an Ultra Rifle in .25-06. Do I need to be concerned about this or is it an infrequest event? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

My 223 Bull will stick the cases of Winchester Ballistic Tips. All others I have tried eject with no problem. They shoot very well but I have to push out the cases with a cleaning rod. Not worth the trouble. I just shoot a different brand.

Is this a result from chamber pressure or perhaps undersized chamber?

I have yet to a problem with stuck cases with store bought ammo. I have had some with my home made but I am still learning. At least I haven't blown any thing up I haven't wanted to. :-D

I get stuck cases (mostly on a freshly cleaned gun) as other post have mentioned I had used a cleaning rod to pop them out it's a pain in the but. But last week I added a manual extracter grove (see fredm's web site about tweeking you handi) basically you file a small notch in the back of the barrel.

Mine gives me just enough clearence to get into the extracter grove with a smalll screw dirver. I hardly need to touch it and it is out. I used a small screw driver that I had to grind down to fit and drilled a hole in the handle for a lanyard. Shooting PD's on the weekend I had 2 stuck cases with the extracter grove there was hardly a hicup. I plan on using my 243 ultra for deer this fall I'll take that modified screw driver and keep it in the ammo belt that will be on the side of the stock, nice and handy.

Question: When a case gets stuck, does the ejector pop uot, leaving the case in the chamber, or does the ejector stay flush with the chamber, behind the case's rim?

It seems that if the ejector pops out, you wouldn't need to cut a groove for manual extraction. Just use a small hook to pop the case out using the existing groove.

My ultra 223 has never stuck a case and some of my reloads have flattened the primer :shock: . I used an empty case with JB's to polish the chamber before I ever fired a shot through it. I also cleaned the ejector assy very well too.

AS for the ejector, when my sons 223's have stuck (no more) the ejector stayed in, flush.

I I think a better approach is to carry a 6" steel rod smaller than the bore and drop it through the bore. Never had one stand up to that.

I would make that a brass rod so as to not scratch the rifling in the bore when you drop it in.

The screwdriver behind the popped out ejector pin as mentioned here,
has worked for me.. In the past on other barrels I have fixed this problem with electric brake cleaner, and a good polishing. Not on my .308
This is annoying. I would have thought that NEF would have fixed this design error by now...

Are you shooting .308 Winchester or 7.62 NATO?
Factory or handloads?
Does the ejector stick behind the brass or skip over it?

I have a ultra 223 and have had stuck cases, a small rod dropped down the bbl knocks them out pronto, just recently I have polished the chamber with some 600 grit paper and a cordless drill, topped it off with some jb and a good cleaning, have yet to shoot it to see if they stick anymore, but the chamber is definitely smoother than it was and this should work(I think)

One thing to watch out for. When you clean your handy and set it muzzle up, the left over oil or cleaner will run down into the chamber. On other guns this residue can run out into the magazine or clip but on the handi there is nowhere for it to go. This excess oil and junk has caused case sticking in my 280. If I make sure the chamber is clean and dry, No Problems. I did have some stick earlier but found that my OCL was to long.

I just ran 20 worked up handloads with 100 grain Hornady bullets and didn't have a problem with them even at max. This was a brand new 25-06 Ultra.

Went to the field where we shoot, capable of up to 400 yards, we set targets at 100, 200, and 300 yards, shot groups at all three targets and am happy to say no stuck cartridges since the polish job on the chamber.
