I think I'm in love.
« on: August 25, 2004, 03:27:23 AM »
A guy at the range showed me his stainless steel 5" barrelled Ruger Bisley 45LC the other day and THIS is the single action gun I want. Can you tell me more about it? What do I have to do to it to make it shoot good, and will it be worth it to do the work?

Well, I bought one of these fine revolvers a couple of years ago - they are great!  All I did to mine, was ream the cylinder throats to .4526, install a wolf spring kit, and a belt mountain base pin.  I also have a higher front sight yet to install.  You can still find them on the internet, in places like gunsamerica and gunbroker.com.  If I could only have one SA revolver, this would be the one....

Tom

Wal Rudy all I can say is I sure hope the wife don't find out about you being in love.    :-D

You know what a Ruger fan I am so keep that in mind as I tell you this tale.

I have one. It is one of only two Rugers I own. The other I've not yet shot but hope to soon. Ya know what I had to do to mine to make it shoot? I had to drop some ammo in that hole on the right side of it. Yup that's it. Nuttin more has been required.

It is tight. Very tight. Only Freedom Arms SA revolvers have proven tighter. Trigger out of the box was really quite nice and needed no real work but I did take one leg of the spring off as many do with Ruger SA revolvers and that lightened it up just a wee bit. It is now about 3.5 pounds, crisp and has nearly no creep. A very shootable trigger. The throats are right on the money and need no work on mine.

I don't think I've found a load it really hates. Bevel base cast bullets are the worst and even most all loads with them are plenty accurate for hunting. Me and it amaze me each time I shoot it. Groups are way smaller than my old eyes should deliver with a 5.5" barrel. This one for sure is a keeper. Matter of fact it has proven so good it is the reason I've bought the second Ruger (a 77-17) to try. If it too proves as good as this one, well, I might buy yet another. I really do think I'd like to own a Bisley in .22LR and .357 Magnum and have toyed with one to replace the Taurus M44 if it shoots as good as my Accusport .45 Colt does.

And you KNOW from me that's some mighty high praise considering my experiences with Rugers.

That's encouraging guys. Thanks. The particular one I'm looking at is NOT the vaquero, but the one with the unfluted cylinder and the adjustable sights.

Is this the revolver you're looking for?
http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=22286458
I bought both of mine from him and would highly recommend him.  He had some with consecutive serial numbers when I bought mine, so I bought two.  Shipping was only $20 for both revolvers!
Hope this helps!

A lot of older Rugers had some problems and you had to work on most of them to make them shoot well( at least in the 45 colts ) , but Ruger has come a long way in correcting those problems making the newer guns in 45 colt decent shooters right out of the box.

I just took delivery of a Bisley .45 but the blue 7.5 inch version  You might want to call Ruger directly and see if they have any of the SS versions left.  I called them a month or so ago because my dealer was told Bisleys had been discontinued by Accusport.  Of course Ruger said they were not discontinued and that they had hundreds in stock and even a few of the special ones left.   The Accu sales troll was probably thinking of the special or wanted to push something else.  My dealer ended up ordering one from RSR but they "lost" it and tried again from another distributor.  All in all it took nearly a month to get it after putting my deposit on the order.

So far I've put in a spring kit that improve the trigger pull and have a free spin pawl that needs to be installed.  I also mic'ed the chamber mouths and they read .448 so I'll be getting them reamed to the proper size.

In my never to be humble oppenion, Ruger makes the best single action revolvers for the money on the market today. I personally would want a spring kit in any of the New Models that I`ve ever seen, but then I am used to shooting guns with very lite triggers. I don`t like lbs., I like ozs., even on handguns.

Got two of these myself and yes, they are about as close to being the perfect SA as I will proberly ever find.  They're part of a series of special "distributor" editions made by Ruger for Acusport.  Other were made in .44 and .41 also.  I believe there was 1200 or so of them made in .45 or so I was told anyways. Both of mine came from ray's bait & tackle.  Can't say anything bad about their service - or the guns I got from them.  More than likely I'll also be having Mitch Rosen make me another holster for one of these fine Bisleys to ride in.

Saw one NIB at a gun show this morning for 410 bucks. This seems to be a little cheaper than I've seen them online. If anyone is interested I can ask the guy if he will do internet sales.

Be Safe,

Just got (about a month ago) a 41 Bisley from Ray's Bait. Good to do business with. Love the gun. Balance is real nice, trigger not bad, what's this spring kit we are talking about and where do I get one? Haven't got it to shoot real well yet, but I'm used to shooting Contenders. Anybody recommend a left hand holster for this 5.5 inch Bisley??

I got mine from Brownell's.  I consists of a reduced powder trigger and hammer spring and an extra powder base pin latch spring.

Perhaps. But I've sure said enough bad things about the bad ones I've had. Only right to tell folks now that I've actually found a good one.

Mine is bone stock. Well except for taking off one leg of the spring for lighter trigger pull.  What kinda grips are those? I'm thinking what I really want on mine are the gray laminated grips. Ruger makes them but sure thinks highly of them based on asking price. I can buy custom grips cheaper.

Got the grips from www.pistolgrips.com

Standard width faux ivory.

Pleasure to shoot and control even though the grips are smooth.

Does anyone have a Ruger model number for either the .44 or .45 stainless Bisley above?

I need one and I am thinking that I will have to get a model number so my local gunshop can order one for me.

Thanks in advance.

The model number on my 45 Colt box is KRBN-455W.  It was a special order item where I got it.  It is my favorite SA.

Very good Jay, I wondered if anyone would notice. Yes MS Digital Pro 9.  Also wiped the serial number from the photo.

Thanks for the information Grampa Mike!

I am hoping to make some calls this week and try to locate a fine Bisley for my self.

I did not catch the S/N. I have a older monitor that is darker than normal when it comes to viewing on line pictures.

I'd like to get the same grips that you have too. I have a little custom .22lr Bisley that could us some nice grips too.

Thanks again,

Jay
