Just wondering...
« on: August 30, 2004, 04:17:17 PM »
With the "gun free school zone", I sometimes drive past a local high school when going  hunting.
  The school building is about 300 ft from the road, across the street another building of the same facility is about 75 ft from the road.
   Could I be in trouble if I were stopped on the highway with my guns in my truck?

ironglow:  I doubt it.  Streets and roads are public property and you are legal there.  Schools, although public property, are exempt from that definition only under the gun free school zone law.  It just means that you cannot carry your gun legally on school property.

That being said, I think the law is foolish.  In the few situations I have read about where some responsible adult with a gun has stopped or prevented school shootings it was the actions of those responsible private ccw citizens who have prevented a tragedy whether they violated a law or not.

I also find it interesting that wherever legal carry is not allowed by private citizens, the police do have the authority and we know that in New York State, a private citizen goes through a more intensive background scruity and personal history check than do police candidates.  Go figure, huh? Just my two cents worth.  Mikey.

My good friend's parents own a house that the backyard boarders a K-8 grade school. The school itself (the building) is less then 200 feet from their house, it's that close. His father has alway's owned guns and go's hunting regularly. I don't see how anyone could tell him he can't have his guns, I mean it's his house.

I drive by schools all the time when I'm "carrying". My way thinking is as long as I'm just "driving by" and not stopping or going on the school property I'm ok!

Thanks Guys;
  I have wondered about that possible "catch 22" situation for some time now.
  I believe that is one of those stupid "feel good" laws that are often passed...

If a terrorist or madman were going to take a gun to the local school, I'm sure he would not change his mind because the school is a "gun free" area...

Come on legislators...well...Duh!

    Something like school areas being "drug free" zones....yikes!...I thought those kind of drugs were illegal to possess anyway....Duh!

   Alas...don't expect a great deal of common sense from politicians...

Sad I can remember a time when I and my friends could take are rifles & shotguns to school, place them in a spot in the administrative office and pick them up at the end of school and go hunting. A friend of mine in PA dad drove school bus. He use to carry a rifle with him all the time just incase their was a woodchuck that need taken care of or a buck during deer season that he spotted. Many a time his bus would stop and he would be out the door with the rifle while all the kids on the bus would be hoping he could make the shot. Man how times have changed.>John
