Length of pull?
« on: September 06, 2004, 06:24:15 PM »
I'd always been told that a rule of thumb for LOP was grasp the wrist of the stock (pistol grip) in a normal fashion and if it rested in the crook of your bent arm then it was OK.

My problem is with scoped rifles.  It always seems like I have to stretch my neck too far forward to see the scope properly.  Maybe my arms are longer than normal for my height.  I don't have caluses on my knuckles, and my arms just don't seem all that long to me.

Anyone else have this issue?  Do you cut your stocks to adjust it?

On open sights there is no problem, of course.

Handirifle:

I've always had a similar problem as well...most rifles with anytype of stout recoil pad just makes matters worse...that is the # 1 reason for me using a Leupold scpoe...with it's non-critical eye relief...shooting has become so-much easier...as far as regular shotguns with their 14 1/2" lenght of pull...same thing...so on those I have a recoil pad fitted and remove some of the stock...it's a bite having to pay as much as we do for them...even though they have very good glass in them...the other one with a bit longer eye relief is the Burris line...it's amazing what that extra 1/2"-3/4" of eye relief will do for you...

This Simmona Aetec I just got has 5" when on 2.8 power.  It seems to lose about an inch at the higher settings but still a lot better then most that I have.

How, exactly does one measure the true length of pull?

If I make my Savage to fit like I want it will only be 12 1/2" from the trigger to the back of the recoil pad.  That'll put the recoil pad right against the cheek piece on the stock.  I'm not too concerned since it is an old gun and I got it used.  The stock wasn't in the best of shape anyway, about 80% I'd say.

I have cut stocks before, I cut my two son's rem 700's down an inch for them.  They had no recoil pad and it would have been way too long to just ad it on.

Well
I got the Luepold extension rings.  Found them at a local shop for $35, that's less than online.  Front is only extension but it works good that way.  I also cut 1" off the stock.  Had to do some tricky sanding cause it was getting into the cheek rest and the wood got a lot fatter there.

Thank heavens for a belt sander.  Got it all back together sanded and stained.  It looks good enough for hunting.   Maybe after season is over I'll refinish the stock.  We'll see.

I fit the pad back real nice but it looks kinda funky where I patched the old sling mount hole :?  (it cut the old one in half) since the only wood filler I had was way too light in color.  Oh well, the stock is sealed, and stained and the scope is on.  Pops right into full view as soon as I put my head down and just have to scoot a little forward when the power is cranked all the way up.

Now just gotta get a day at the range to try out those partition loads.

Well....good luck with it...sounds like you found your fix for your problem...don't know of anyother way of doing what you did with out a different scope or sending it in to have the stock reworked...

wasn't about to send this stock anywhere.  It's an old gun, bought second hand.  It was left handed, right caliber, right price and it shoots.  Beyond that all the metal is in good shape but the stock always needed work.  I guess I have a perfect excuse to redo it this spring huh?

I just hope those noslers work good in it.
