I have a winchster ser # list , I can look it up to determine the year of manuf. There are some VERY EXPENSIVE tang sights on the market, and are made to shoot at VERY LONG ranges but I wonder if your "worn" rifling will do them justice? On the other hand some decent sights are made in Italy wich may be more to your liking Around $50.00. Most are made on 1.510" centers, (are there holes already drilled?) Many gun shops carry these. As for loads, I don't shoot a 32-40! BUT WISH I DID!!!

Hillbill, you can get a NEW Lyman #2 tang sight that fits your rifle without having to drill any new holes for about $73, or a Marble's for $125 from Buffalo Arms. I think the Lyman was a factory option on a lot of them old Winchesters, and it is a good hunting tang sight. No reason a peep wont work with a blade front sight, all the US Army's M16's have a peep and post, which is the same thing. You can reach Buffalo Arms on line, or call 208-263-6953.

On the 85 Winchester, the rear tang screw (the one that goes all the way through the stock) is used as the means to secure the rear of the tang sight. The front hole should be 2 3/16" in front of the tang screw. Some rifles need a replacement tang screw that is a tiny bit longer to mount the tang sight, and some sight manufacturers supply them...some don't.

Check Cape Outfitters for their vernier tang sight repro for your Low Wall!
They have one there for $59.95 that is an exact repro of the original. They don't come with the longer tang screw, so you'll need to buy one for $5 through gunpartsspecialist.com I got one for my Hi Wall and it is very nicely finished!
