Simmons Pro Air scope?
« on: September 11, 2004, 05:26:36 AM »
I was thinking of scoping one of my air rifles later. For now I have a red dot on my R7. The scopes I woud have chose are no longer being produced - the Burris Rimfire/Air Gun 4X  and 6X , both with adjustable objective. One of those would have complimented the R7 quite nicely

The Simmons Pro Air 4X has the adjustable objective and is priced around $79 or so in the sites I have looked at. They are not compact like the former Burris scopes but they are a lot less expensive. Anyone have any experience with one of these?

I say go for the BSA Optics.  I have one of theirs on mine and it works like a charm.  My scope is 2-7x32AO 3" eye relief, 12.25" long, 14oz.  With their AO lenses, they are adjustable from 7.5yds-infinity, meaning it goes through all the typical yardages to 100, then shows the figure eight.  The price, $64.99, not bad when you take into consideration what they are capable of.  If not this one, they have two other variations.  Let me know what you decide   OOPS!  I forgot to mention, they also come with their own screw-in scope covers too.    Patriot

TC Shooter,

Go to http://www.burrisoptics.com/special.html and view the Burris scopes(the 3-9X is great for those that don't want to much magnification) that will fill your needs.  Lawdog

I have being using Leapers scopes for awhile without failures.  They offer high quality optics and features at a bargain price.  You may want to take a look at this http://www.pyramydair.com/site/articles/leapers-scopes/

Read the Fun Supply link and they do not recommend any low cost variables.

"Variables are the absolute worst. NEVER buy a low cost variable. There are so many precise moving parts in them that there is no way to make one at a  low cost. Point of impact will vary with magnification, and likely shift at a single magnification. Optics will be bad. If you are tempted to buy one anyway, just send one half of the money to me  instead. You will only waste one half the money you would have, and the garbage man will have one less item to truck away. "

Of course that is just their opinion. They do recommend a 4X fixed power AO scope they sell for $50. Still think one of the former Burris compact AO rimfire/airgun 4X or 6X scopes would be  perfect  for the R7 - found a 6X on eBay but the seller did not answer the questions I asked. So , for now , I will be content with the red dot. But I do appreciate all the other opinions given so far!

TC Shooter,

I don't know what low cost variable scopes the editors at Fun Supply were talking about but you should take a look at the air gun scopes offered by BSA.  Go to http://www.bsaoptics.com/productlist.asp?ID=11&Cat_Name=airrifle22.jpg&Cat_Code=AR&Cat_Type=RFAM and take a look at them for yourself.  BSA scopes are very different than the ones they made a couple of years ago.  They don't do any of the things stated by Fun Supply.  POI doesn't change, optics are great - clear and sharp to the edges.  I have one on a heavy springer(TF 99M) and so does my son in-law(RWS 350).  I know of a number of others using them on heavy springers and they work just as BSA says they will.  Check them out and you won't be sorry.  Lawdog

That is quite true about the BSAs, as I do own one.  I have done several groups on varying power settings, and it still does it right.   They offer a very crisp sight picture.  When I get another air gun, I will definitley consider another BSA. :D

I'm considering getting an RWS 350 myself, Lawdog, what groups has your son-in-law printed with it?  Patriot

A lot of BSA recommendations! I did look at one last weekend - it was the 3X-12X. The scope did present a good image in the well lit store. The scope would be overly large for my little R7! The 2X-7X mentioned first by Patriot is one I would like to check out.  SWFA has them listed for $55. They have a fixed 4X  BSA for $49 with adjustable objective.

Once I decide what to go with I will post my choice here. Thanks for the replys - very helpful!

Patriot,

His groups usually run around 1/2" at 45 yards.  His 350 is a .22 caliber so as to be legal for turkey hunting here in California.  RWS models usually give very good accuracy.  My only complaint about them(and most other air gun manufactures) is they inflate their velocity ratings.  The best velocity we have been able to get from his is just over 1,000 fps. with the lightest weight pellet we could find.  With the power of the 350 you don't want to shoot light weight pellets very often or for very long.  Not enough resistance for the compression chamber.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Only have a Beeman ss1 myself and I've been shopping for something more powerful for my R7.  My online research has found that of the 3 BSA air gun models the only one to get resonably consistent good reliability ratings is the 2-7, the 3-12 didn't rate well with several reviewers and I don't recall the other scope - this might have been on Midway's product reviews.

I've seen good reviews of the Simmons ProAirs and the Swift 4-12, the airgun rated Bushnells too.  I'm tempted by the Bushnell Trophy 4-12 AO.  For the R7 I think the Bushnell sportsman airgun rated scopes are supposed to be sufficient too.

Swift recently came out with a 3-9 that is really tempting me too.

Apparently those high power scopes let you enjoy the last bit of accuracy in the R7.  And there are ways to adjust some  AO scopes to get less than the standard 10m minimum focus range.

Dand,

Midway's review you have been reading about BSA scopes are from a few years ago.  BSA has remodeled their optics line in the last two years.  The 3-12X 44mm is clear and sharp to the edge.  POI doesn't change with power/adjustment changes.  Also both Burris and BSA scopes will adjust down to 7 yards(not meters).  As far as Bushnell optics go just remember who now makes the POS(were and still are) Tasco scopes.  The Bushnell are not clear and sharp to the edges.  POI can/will change with adjustments changes.  Just put a Simmons/Swift/etc. side by side with a Bushnell and the difference is obvious.  Small groups and tight lines to all.  Lawdog

thanks for the update Lawdog didn't realize BSA had made improvements. I've seen a lot of uncomplimentary comments about BSA scopes on some other air gun forums too - except the 2-7 seems to get good press. Good to see that market competition forces improvements.

VictorLouis,

You want to take the stories that Chuck Hawks writes for what they are.  Amusement Purposes Only.  He has been caught way too many times writing scathing articles about products that he has never even seen let alone tried.  Take his stuff with a grain of salt.  Lawdog
